environmental community! We are heading to Power Shift 2013, an amazing weekend long convergence of 15,000 youth activists from all over the country. But we need your help to make this happen.
What is Power Shift 2013?
While at Power Shift, we will hone our organizing skills, develop our leadership skills, learn about diversity and the recognition of privilege, plan solid and effective campaigns for our communities, build a stronger team of organizers, bring together a fragmented chain of Virginia activists for good, and so much more. This event is unlike any other, and we cannot afford to miss it.
Why Can't We Afford to Miss It?
For starters, we're living in the second-most climatically threatened city in the United States (second only to New Orleans)! The largest coal pier in North America sits in our backyard! The ecosystem of the Chesapeake Bay, center of local environment and economy, is crashing! I can wipe the coal soot off of my house when it doesn't rain for a week! Our coastlines are being threatened with seismic airgun testing and offshore drilling! Whew, I'm getting ahead of myself. But you get the idea-- Norfolk is in trouble, and we're determined to help save it.
What Do We Need?
So far five of us have registered, but we're waiting on five others who need the registration fee upfront in order to do it.
$80 registration fee X 5 people = $400
Then we'll need two cars in order to get there. Assuming gas is $4/gal (it's more up there) and the car gets 25 MPG, each carload will spend about $150.
$150 gas X 2 cars = $300.
Then we need to eat! We plan on buying food and cooking where we're staying for most of our meals, but we still need to feed 10 over 4 days! That's 120 meals! So that's what the last $300 goes to. $2.50 per person, per meal at "home" = $300.
All in all, that's $1,000.Some of our fundraising will be done outside of this website, so we'll update our progress as needed.
