This page is for my daughter, Cera and my son (in-law) Nathaniel Smith.
Everything is happening so fast, and there isn’t much information: “Nathaniel has cancer, we will start his chemotherapy on Tuesday”—it is a generic statement for our son who is now diagnosed with “Philadelphia chromosome-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia”.
On Christmas Day 2014, Nathaniel received a cut on his hand while trying to untangle the dog (again). He had been to the doctor on several occasions prior to this incident for fever, fatigue and many other illnesses but his symptoms where never taken seriously. It has been agony waiting for tests and results and then more tests. In the back of my mind all I can hear is my daughter's words “Monday… we won’t know anything until the tests are back on Monday – Tuesday we will start chemotherapy”.
Married just over one year, this diagnosis has been terrifying for both of them. From the moment of Nathaniel’s diagnosis, Cera knew that this would be as much her journey as it would be Nathaniel’s. The outpouring of love and encouragement mean so much to both of them but financially this is an uphill climb. The two of them are trying to focus on his treatment and recovery but the cost of basic living expenses is completely overwhelming them (Cera cried just yesterday because she had to ask me to pay the $8.00 fee for parking at UT Medical Center) my heart broke into a million pieces as I saw her trying to hold back the tears. Cera has grown into such a strong young woman and asking for help is so difficult for her.
This is the reason I started this page for Nathaniel and my daughter. At this time the need for your support is great. Cera works full time at minimum wage. She also works side jobs just trying to pay for basic life necessities. Any support you can contribute will help Nathaniel and Cera to survive this battle against cancer.
