My White Wife . . . at FringeNYC

WHO WE ARE

We are Vanessa Shealy and Rick Younger, two performers who met doing summer stock fourteen years ago, and ended up getting married!  Now we are a mixed race, married couple - Vanessa is white, and Rick is black.

As you can imagine, we talk about race together - a lot! Sometimes in a marriage you can talk about things with each other that you'd never talk about with anyone else. Well, we're going outside our comfort zone and taking our private conversations to the theater!

WHAT WE'RE DOING

We're proud to present the World Premiere of My White Wife, or So I Married a Black Man as part of the 20th annual New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC).  The show is co-directed by Melissa Attebery (FringeNYC/One, Two, Whatever you do…) and Carl Foremen Jr. (College Humor/Funny or Die), and comes to FringeNYC via Emerging Artists Theatre, where the show was developed as part of their New Work Series.

Through storytelling, and stand-up comedy, we hope to reveal some inside information about race that audiences have been too scared, polite, or PC to ask.  We hope that our 75-minute production will give people of all complexions permission to have a difficult and desperately needed conversation about race.

The conversation about race in this country needs all our voices. And we want our stories to open people up to a new way to talking and thinking about race.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES

Here is a breakdown of just a few of the expenses we have, and where your donation will go:

$725 - FringeNYC participation fee
$350 - postcard printing
$390 - program ad
$600 - stipends for our production staff
$600 - stipends for our directors
$250 - publicity

Certainly there are other expenses, so as you can see, your donation will help us soooo very much!

Since we are partnering with Emerging Artists Theatre, a 501c3 nonprofit theatre here in NYC, your gift is tax-deductible.

Here's a little more about us:

Rick Younger is a stand-up comedian, actor and singer, is a regular correspondent on the "Guys Tell All" monthly segment on NBC's The Today Show. Rick has appeared on television in all three Law & Orders, Damages, Rescue Me, and Blue Bloods and recently in the Tribeca Film Festival feature film, Geezer, opposite Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong. Vanessa Shealy is a playwright and actor whose productions include Tea in the Afternoon (Theater Row), American Drum Circle (UP Theater Company), One, Two, Whatever you do...(FringeNYC) and CROOKED at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

If all of this sounds great, but really you'd just prefer to come and see the show - GREAT.
