My friend Annette Miller and her family have lived in their home at 682 30th St. in West Oakland for the last 60 years and are among the oldest homeowners in a quickly gentrifying West Oakland. They are facing a foreclosure on this home now from NationStar Bank.
The family, composed of Annette, her brothers, children and father, James Johnson, never missed a payment on their mortgage. Due to a clerical error, NationStar suddenly rejected seven years of mortgage payments and sold the house from under their family at an auction.
Annette and the ACCE Home Defenders League managed to reverse that sale and make additional mortgage payments. Now the bank is again trying to sell the home. Annette has lined up a VA loan but there will be closing costs the family needs help paying. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO HELP THIS FAMILY REMAIN IN THEIR HOME.
Mr. Johnson, Annette’s father, served in the US Military for 22 years and is a purple heart veteran. He loves living in his home surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He always has a cheerful smile and some time to chew the fat and if you go by there he’ll make you take some fruit from his blackberry bushes and fruit trees out back.
Annette is an active member of the community. She’s on the School Side Council, a part of the New McClymonds Committee, a volunteer for GoPublic Oakland and has been a block captain for National Night Out, feeding her entire block for the last four years.
Annette and her family hope to send a message to the big banks, saying, “I’ve heard the phrase Black Lives Matter a lot recently. My home is my life. And I’m not giving up on it.”
