Maryamu Foundation Development Fund

Maryamu Foundation is named after my grandmother; a woman that showed me that one passionate person can change the world by changing the small piece of earth she occupies, by doing what she can with what she has.

For the past year, I have been working with many other advocacy, governmental and human rights groups that have championed the cause to save the Chibok girls, however, I am well aware that not enough is being done to end the torture, rape and massacre of girls and women in northern Nigeria.

And though I pledge to daily continue my efforts that have helped to bring 4 girls to the US to start a new life, the reality is only few will come. And so I say to those girls that are still in Nigeria, they will never be forgotten. There is hope for them as well. My aim in not just to aid in bringing the few lucky girls that were fortunate enough to be rescued, cared for and brought to America to continue their education. My mission is to make it possible that ALL girls are given the very basic human right to an education free from fear. I want to make sure they have a safe place to stay, learn, grow, recover and empower themselves, their families and their communities so that these kidnappings which are still happening in northern Nigeria will be a nightmare of the past, not a foreshadowing of more terror.

Maryamu Foundation will be there, in the villages and towns that have been devastated. It will be there for not only the Chibok girls but for all women and girls who want nothing more than the right to an education, to sustainable development, health care and empowerment.

My mother comes from northern Nigeria. She was born during a time when girls didn't go to school. But she did. And now there are students all over America who credit her for their love of science. They are doctors, nurses, researchers, pharmacists and science teachers! How many lives have been saved by the education of 1 child? Every girl matters. Every girl has in her the potential to change the world.

I do this for my mother, my grandmother Maryamu and my grandfather who educated his girls. I hope to follow in their brave footsteps and be bold in the face of apathy.
