MBCT for Erica!

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is a psychological therapy designed to aid in preventing the relapse of depression.

It uses traditional Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) methods and adds in newer psychological strategies such as mindfulness and mindfulness meditation.

Dr Marcus Averbeck is a local Consultant Psychotherapist and Mindfulness Teacher, who offers Psychotherapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and the facilitator has contacted him in regards to me maybe joining his next 8-week Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy course.

However, it comes with a price. One I cannot afford.
It's £250 for the 8 week programme.

It is £35 for a meeting to see if I am suitable for this course, of which - is highly likely.

After all, Dr M Averbeck covers all of my "issues" as part of his counselling background.

MBCT has been recommended by a group facilitator at a local self-help group I attend, who thought this would be beneficial to me.

As most of my friends and family are aware, if they can remember, as I struggle to remember too, that I have Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety and Depression, EDNOS, Fibromyalgia, Hypermobilty, TMJ disorder, Hemicrania Continua, Migraine, and Primary Stabbing Headache.

I face a daily battle of exhaustion and extreme and variating pain, alongside the emotional instability and disturbed patterns of thinking or perception. I often find myself with severe mood swings which happen over a short space of time, and this can mean feeling suicidal and hopeless, to feeling fine a few hours later.

My anxiety has resulted in dermatillomania, where I pick at my fingernails from morning till night, and I often wake up doing it too. I have found something to help with this, but it is not the solution to fix it. I need to deal with the cause and the anxiety behind why I do this.

I have had some therapies over the course of my teens and early adulthood, mainly being counselling, and then seeing my care co ordinator, being referred and having attended the STEPPS "Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and. Problem Solving" programme designed for BPD, otherwise known as Emotional Intensity Disorder. And it's follow on programme Stairways.

After these different types, I was referred to attend a year long psycho social group based Therapeutic Community for those with complex emotional needs associated with personality disorder. I've recently completed my year at the community, and am now trying to get my life on track, and look after myself.

Although the community provides a further 18 months service, it is only for 2 hours once a week, which is not enough time to deal with the emotional complexities of an entire group.

So, I am trying my best to keep myself busy, by studying a home learning course, and I am trying to help myself by attending a Self-Help group for Depression and Anxiety.  However I feel that this currently is not enough, and as I'm trying so hard to help myself, and I know so many of my friends and family can see this too, I am hoping that they/you will help me fund this programme.

I wouldn't be asking if I didn't need the help and support but I really would love to give this a go. I would do anything to find peace within and help my body become as pain free as possible so I can live the life I deserve to have.

How would MBCT help me?

MBCT will help me learn mind management skills leading to heightened metacognitive awareness, acceptance of negative thought patterns and an ability to respond in skillful ways, which having a history of being destructive would be an incredible achievement.

MBCT teaches to decenter negative thoughts and feelings, allowing the mind to move from an automatic thought pattern to conscious emotional processing, which means my irrational thoughts, feelings/emotions could too be helped out.

And by training the mind to connect with the body, I would hope it would help to prevent the negative loop of pain - self hatred/worthless/useless - fatigue - pain etc, by embracing it and living in the moment and being aware that all is okay!

If you are able to offer some support, please may I asking you kindly to donate to this cause and help me get one step closer to going on this MBCT course.

***If I am unable to reach my target by the next MBCT course, I will be using the money raised to purchase: The Mindful Way Workbook - An 8-Week Program to Free Yourself from Depression and Emotional Distress", and attend a course on Mindfulness at my local adult learning education centre.***

Thank you, xxx
