Homeward Bound https://homewardboundprojects.com.au

Homeward Bound is a groundbreaking leadership, strategic and science initiative and outreach for women, set against the backdrop of Antarctica.

The initiative aims to heighten the influence and impact of women with a science background in order to influence policy and decision making as it shapes our planet.

Women are under-represented globally in science and higher education.
Homeward Bound aims to train a thousand female scientists over the next ten years to have a more powerful voice at the global leadership table.
This includes women from all career stages of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)

I am very honoured and excited to have been chosen as one of 80 women from all across the world to be part of Homeward Bound 2019.

Why sponsor me?

There is evidence of significant challenges facing women in STEM subjects today.

By taking part in the Homeward Bound Leadership Programme, I will acquire key skills to deal with these challenges and pass on this knowledge to future generations of women in science.

The leadership program runs for a year (and beyond) and culminates in three weeks in Antarctica (January 2019).

The total costs for the Antrarctic expeditionis approximately $40,000 per person, the trip costs me $16,000 USD in total.
I plan to apply for travel grants.  By crowdfunding I hope to gain some sponsorship to partially fund the expedition as well as some offline events.

Why Antarctica?

-Regions of Antarctica are currently showing amongst the fastest responses to climate change seen anywhere on the planet
-The study of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, and their roles in the climate system, provides critical insights into global-scale change, and the influence of human activities on environmental change
-The continent is iconic as a wild, beautiful and unique environment that has captured the imagination of many leaders in the past
-By taking this journey together we envision the experience will create strong bonds, inspire action and lead to extraordinary collaborations between the women

About me

I'm a post doctoral researcher at the University of Strathclyde.  I'm a biochemist and microbiologist.  I'm interested in antibiotic resistance and the search for new anti-microbial agents.

I love the mountains and have recently qualified as a UK Mountain Leader (summer).  Going to Antarctica is a dream I have had for a long time and the leadership programme will help me develop as a scientist, future leader and woman in STEM

I'm also a big fan of our planet and how we can be sustainable in this big wide world.    We have no Planet B.
