The Kama Foundation

Donation protected
The Kama Foundation is a non-governmental organisation that aims to promote Education, Health and Nutrition, and Human Rights in remote villages in Simbu Province, Papua New Guinea.
The Foundation was established in 2013 in honour of Mr Kama Kuman. Kama was an interpreter (tanim tok) and an aid ('mangi masta') to the Australian administrators during the colonial era in the 1960s. Working tirelessly for the British and Australian administrators ('kiaps'), Kama forged a vision for his people - that they be skilled, educated and enjoy a better life like the 'whiteman'. On many occassion, Kama risked his life and comfort to protect the kiaps while facilitating linkages with the natives.  To his people, Kama was an ambassador, an orator, an advocate and a chief. But above all, he was a faithful public servant serving the country (PNG) for 21 years. He was paid a monthly wage of only $3 (7 PNG Kina). This Foundation was established to honour his vision and continue his dedication and commitment to the welfare of the village people.

PROGRAMS YOU CAN SUPPORT THROUGH DONATION

Education Program

a.     Scholarships

The Foundation provides scholarships to school children in remote villages to encourage excellence in academic, leadership and discipline (LAD) in their schools. The scholarship program promotes gender equality and responds to students with special needs. For just $150 a year, YOU can sponsor a student and make a significant difference in their future. All sponsors can choose to receive naming rights to the scholarship award of their choice. There are 8 categories of scholarships from Dux, to Disability and Gender. Please see details on the Foundation facebook page below for sponsorship. Since 2013, 57 scholarships were awarded to village students through the Foundation.

b.     Learning Facilities

Kama Foundation and its partners provide library books and computers to schools. It also provides computer training for teachers. The three ‘pilot’ schools are Mul, Gumine and Nondri. Mul is the first remote primary school in the country to teach and graduate students with basic computer literacy training.
Support us so we can continue this important project to empower the learning facilities of rural schools.

c. Elementary School

As of 2017, Kama Foundation, in partnership with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, will commence an elementary school in the village of Gumine. We need financial support to meet the costs of running the school. Costs include: learning and teaching materials, construction of a teacher's house, water tank for clean water and a classroom.

Health Program

The Health Program engages overseas medical interns and runs mentoring and awareness initiatives:

a.     Medical Internship

Kama Foundation engages medical interns from the Australian National University (ANU) to work in Kundiawa General Hospital (KGH) and rural aid posts in Gumine District. This project is in partnership with the Simbu Provincial Government and KGH.

b.     Mentoring

Kama Foundation conducts awareness and mentoring programs for unemployed youths and school leavers in Gumine District. Because youths are often seen as perpetrators of law and order issues, the mentoring program benefits their mental health, broadens their perspective, and encourages them to develop a positive outlook on life. Your support will enable us with the resources to continue such program.

Human rights

Human rights concerns are central to the operation of Kama Foundation. It's programs are tailored to ensure that rights of minority and marginalised are not overlooked. In the Scholarship program, special award categories are created for women and disability to promote respect and recognition of their value in the society. Your support will enable us with the resources to continue such program.
