One woman's Journey to Law School

Donation protected
I was born in Santa Ana, California on the 5th day of August in 1992. I was raised in Palm Springs, CA, where I am the oldest of three children. My sister and brother, are twins. My mother, who is also a twin, is the third youngest of a family of 11. She grew up in a home where her father was an abusive alcoholic. My father, the oldest in a family of two, was raised by a single mother until his mother then remarried. When he was two his father abandoned him to pursue his dream of a fast paced life of fortune and fame. A single mother then raised him until age ten. I am the first in my immediate family, and the second in my entire extended family to graduate college.

I was four years old when my parents divorced in May of 1996. By then my father had developed a crack cocaine drug addiction. My mother remarried in 1997 to a man from South Central LA, after knowing him for only 1 year. Together they created a business, and for 9 years life was normal. In 2006, my stepfather became an abusive alcoholic and life took a turn for the worst. In 2005, my mother had had enough and filed for a divorce.

While I have had many obstacles in my life, I have been blessed with a mother whom I consider a best friend, a strong support system, and various talents and opportunities.

I am a professional singer, but only in the shower. I laugh at almost everything. In order to attend college I received several scholarships: The Negro Academic Scholarship Fund and Pathways to Success. These scholarships helped me pay for my four years of college, Pathways to Success being one that I had to reapply for every year.

While at UCR, I had the honor of becoming the face of UCR, sharing my story on newsletters throughout the Community. I have also had the honor of interning for the Attorney General of the State of California in the Executive office of the Department of Justice. It is through these experiences that I have learned I can do anything I set my mind to.

Becoming an attorney is not just a career for me - it has become my life long ambition. In December 2014, I submitted a total of 13 law school applications. I have received acceptance letters from 6 of these schools, I have been denied by 4 (one with option to transfer), and I am waiting to hear from 3 (including my top choice).

As many may know it costs money to attend law school, and this is just the beginning. As of now, I am in need of a $500 seat deposit that is due April 1st, which will save my seat for the school I plan to attend. I am also hoping to raise money for traveling expenses so that I am able to visit two of the out of state schools that I have applied to. I would like to attend Accepted Student Day which is March 21st, so that I am able to familiarize myself, and make sure it is the best school for me.

I realize that this is only the beginning, but I am confident that God is going to make a way for the rest. The two schools I plan to visit are offering partial scholarship money, which is one reason why I am strongly considering leaving CA.

Please support me in my dream. Whether you donate, share this post, or just say a prayer, EVERYTHING HELPS, and I am forever grateful.
