Help Houston- Broken Pelvis & Leg!

"Houston We Have A Problem" 4/15

This is the face of rescue...

This is the voice of rescue...

"I woke up this morning and stepped out onto my front porch and found this little white dog huddled there. I tried to touch him and he cried, he cannot move and is in terrible pain. Please help."

All too often we get a call like this, an urgent plea for help from a kind-hearted person who finds a dog in distress. We cannot turn away from a dog in need, regardless of how many other dogs we are caring for or what our bank account looks like.

We're calling him Houston.

Where did he come from? How did he get here? Why did he choose THAT porch to seek shelter? We can't answer those questions but our vet has determined that he was likely hit by a car, x-rays reveal a fractured pelvis and 4 breaks in his femur. He requires immediate surgery to repair these injuries and the estimated cost is $5,000.

He is only a year old. He has many, many more years of life to look forward to, we just need to fix his broken little body and then of course find him a forever home.

We are committed to helping Houston but any donation that you can make toward his surgery expense will soften the blow to our bank account and allow us to continue helping other dogs like Houston.

Update 4/16: Houston just got out of surgery .. thank you Wags and Walks community! We wouldn't be able to do this without your support and donations!

Update 4/23: We are looking for a very committed foster who is around most if not all hours of the day and night. Houston will need total confinement for 6-8 weeks. Even when he starts to feel better and WANTS to do more (play, run, jump, whatever) the foster will need to have the will power to say no and force him to stay calm and confined. If he is allowed to do too much to soon he will pop the plates and screws that are in his leg and he'll be in pain and we'll have to repeat the surgery. So he must go to a foster that will comply with the restrictions. Confined to a crate, x-pen or small area like a gated kitchen. Only if he can be trusted to remain calm can he come and hang out with the foster parent (sit on the couch to watch tv or whatever.) Taken outside for potty only if he remains calm and only to walk a few feet to take care of business. The Vet couldn't emphasize enough that the foster must be committed. When he starts to feel a little better and wants to be more active they have to be able to say no. A home with no other dogs (or kids) because that will entice him to be more active than he should be.There will be recheck appointments for sure, starting 10 days from now (first recheck on/around 5/4.)
