What would you do if you were a Christian, and wanted to worship, but were told until you changed, you were not welcomed in God's house? What would you do if you were told that God would not receive you the way that you are and so if you don't change, you cannot use your gifts or talents for God's glory nor can you fellowship with the other members of the church? We must not continue to allow persons to be hurt by those who are conservatives and draconian in their teachings and doctrine.
Bishop Abrams was a prominent pastor in Detroit for over 12 years. She had served in many clergy organizations and even taught at the seminary. Her Grace resigned from her pastorate in Detroit, MI in October 2013 due to her disclosing to the church that she was in a same gender marriage. Her church was split over her remaining the pastor after her honesty about her marriage. Bishop Abrams understood the importance of marriage equality and travelled to Iowa to wed her best friend earlier in the year (March 2013). Bishop Abrams received much discrimination in her community after disclosing her sexual orientation and was not welcomed in many clergy/denominational organizations. Her Grace was disgraced by many websites, blogs, papers, sermons, and Bible studies with anti-gay messages and homophobic rhetoric. Bishop Abrams experienced threats by right wing evangelicals and conservatives and thus left Michigan where she had resided for over 15 years. Bishop Abrams has 3 college students, who by the grace of God did not feel the massiveness of her pain. It was she and her wife who took the fall for the discriminationary practices, judgmental actions and non-Christian like actions of many whom she had been surrounded by for years.
When you have God on your side, there is always hope! Hope is the only thing that has kept Bishop Abrams going during this time of discouragement. Bishop Allyson Nelson Abrams is raising money to continue the vision that God has given her to preach, teach, pastor, and encourage ALL people. Her Grace has been led to open a welcoming, affirming, radically inclusive church for ALL people - Empowerment Liberation Cathedral, an MCC Church. Her Grace needs your help with making sure Empowerment Liberation Cathedral, an MCC Church, offers a safe space to all of God's people. Bishop Abrams wants everyone to know and feel the love of God. She wants everyone to be able to worship freely, authentically, and understand that we have all been created in God's image. A pastor in Silver Spring, MD has opened their doors to Bishop Abrams and ELC. They understand that the church should be inclusive and open for ALL people. Empowerment Liberation Cathedral meets at 633 Sligo Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20910 (Church of the Ascenscion sanctuary). ELC, an MCC Church, meets each Sunday at 1:0pm. Services on Sundays are approximately 1 hour. We celebrate LGBTQIA individuals as well as heterosexual individuals, for who they are.
Between January 2014 and August 2014 we need to raise $25,000 to meet the start-up budget to be a social justice ministry and ALL inclusive affirming church. We had a fund raiser in April and are seeking donations through this site. Funds raised here will go towards a budget to assist with our social justice programs and outreach projects. They will also be used for employees of the church and rental expenses. All donations are TAX-DEDUCTIBLE through our MCC 501c3 status.
Please give and be a part of keeping hope ALIVE for so many who have given up and have yet to be affirmed in God's church. We need you to help bring wholeness and healing to many who have lost their way, have been wounded, have given up on God and are ready to give up on life. Your gift will help us build God's kingdom with all of God's creation. Become a part of the voice for the voiceless.
Help Bishop Abrams and ELC remain open and provide a safe space, a welcoming space, an affirming space for persons from all walks of life. Join us in our quest to be sure that all persons experience and understand the true love of God. Also check back often to see how your contribution helped create a miracle. Together we can make history, so that the people in Maryland, Washington DC, and Northern Virginia will know that there is a place for them to feel welcomed, receive God's love, and worship authentically.
Give today. We can't do this alone. We need your help to create a space for all people. Know that every amount counts towards our goal.
Thank you for your contribution and may God continue to bless you. Remember, your donation is TAX-DEDUCTIBLE because with are a 501c3 organization as an MCC Church.
