Shining Light on Haiti's Orphans

Donation protected
In March of 2015 I travelled to Mizak, Haiti for ten days, and immediately knew I wanted to go back for a longer period of time. I fell in love with the country and its people.

I am a Psychology/Biology major; when I returned home I began taking my upper level Psychology classes. We discussed childhood cognitive development at length, and the horrific conditions of many orphanages, especially ones in Romania and China. This brought me such passion and a need to help that I decided to take a year off of school and find a way to do whatever I could for these children.

I decided to start with Haiti. Yes, there are some incredibly difficult conditions in orphanages there, but there are also some very good ones. It seemed like the stepping stone for my bigger goals in other countries.

My cousin Lee has been living in Haiti for the past eight years.  He has built a school, and written The Grinder; a book about the repercussions following the Haitian earthquake of 2010. His new project is to write a book of stories about the orphans of Haiti. After speaking with Lee at length over the ten days I was visiting, he asked me to partner with him on his next project. I said yes, of course I would join him. First though, I wanted to spend a month working in an Haitian orphanage to have a closer experience with these children.

I have been working all summer to save money, and yet this project is bigger than the funds in my bank account. I am asking for support, so that you too can be a part of this dream. I will be starting a blog as a way of letting you experience my journey through this adventure.

My tentative plans are to leave mid- to late-September, 2015, and stay for three months. I will turn twenty-one in Haiti, working on a project that has captured my enthusiasm and my desire to help the world as I can. The first month will be devoted to working directly in an orphanage. I have made contact with several orphanages, and now I am in the deciding phase. I will be collecting stories and working with children.

After my month in the orphanage, it is anticipated that Lee and I will travel throughout the country visiting as many orphanages as possible. My longterm goal is to shine a light on these children, and personalize the orphans of Haiti.
