Shane & Jonas' Medical Fund

Donation protected
Father and newborn son, Shane and Jonas Frehlich, are battling their illnesses at the same time, putting a financial strain on the young family of five.

Jonas’ Story
Jonas was born premature at 33 weeks and is still at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) receiving treatment. He was diagnosed with Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome, a childhood overgrowth syndrome that puts him at risk for kidney and liver tumors. He’ll need blood tests every six weeks, liver scans quarterly, and surgery for an enlarged tongue. In the next year or two, he will also need surgery to repair his abdominal muscles and tissue.
Shane’s Story
Two years ago, Shane was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and went through four rounds of chemo until he was declared cancer free. Unfortunately, his tests from a recent check-up reveal that he has a relapse of Leukemia and he’s currently in the hospital receiving chemo. He will also need a risky bone marrow transplant even though there isn't a perfect match. If you haven't joined already, please consider joining the Bone Marrow Registry. He and many others need to find their matches. It's a very easy and painless process to join. Find out more at bethematch.com (US) and onematch.ca (Canada). As a kinesiology professor at California State University, Northridge, Shane has shaped countless minds and helped guide students towards fulfilling, successful careers. He’s also the president of the faculty senate and a much loved and dedicated member of the university.
Shane and his wife Dianne are still barely recovering financially from his first round of treatments and their twins’ stay in the NICU and subsequent therapy for growth and feeding problems. Shane and Jonas’ expensive treatments will add to their mounting medical debt.

Despite a slew of medical problems, financial burdens and stress, Dianne and Shane remain positive, resilient and hopeful. I’ve been close friends with Dianne for more than 10 years. She’s incredibly kind, crazy intelligent, and hilariously funny. She’s the type of friend who will insist on picking you up from the airport even though she has to take care of twin toddlers and a husband with cancer. She’s just THAT incredible. Both Shane and Dianne have overcome many challenges in the past few years and are still fighting through many more. They’re amazing parents, teachers and friends, and so many of us are incredibly blessed to have them and their beautiful boys in our lives.

How you can help
The Frehlichs have had to deal with so many stressful critical health problems, and to top it all off, their medical expenses are through the roof. This family needs all the help they can get from friends, family and the greater community. Please find it in your heart to donate any amount, whatever you can afford to help alleviate their expenses. Dianne and Shane have given so much to their community as educators, please be their guardian angels and help them in their time of need.

Note: even though it shows my name when you hit "Donate Now," please be well assured that Dianne Frehlich's bank account is linked to this campaign, not mine. Thanks again for helping them out! For more information about the family, like their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ShaneJonasUpdate
