Thanks to community support, the remaining funds for Marichuy's bond have been raised! However, there are still many trans and queer folks in detention. Any additional funds that are raised will go directly to paying bonds for other trans and queer people to get free from immigration detention. We encourage the community to continue to give.
Marichuy needs funds to get free from ICE detention!
The immigration judge has set a deadline of Thursday, January 22nd for the amount to be paid in full.
We are excited that Marichuy is so close to being free.
Marichuy is a young transgender woman who has been detained by ICE for more than a year at the for-profit Eloy Detention Center here in Arizona.
Brought to the United States as a child, Marichuy was deported to Mexico after living here for much of her life. While trying to reestablish herself in Mexico after her deportation, Marichuy survived a transphobic attack. As a result of the attack, Marichuy fled to the border to request asylum in the United States and was placed in immigration detention.
In defiance of existing standards, Marichuy and other transwomen in immigration detention are housed with men. Although Marichuy repeatedly expressed concern for her safety, her complaints went ignored by ICE.
In August 2014, her cellmate raped her. ICE reacted to this by attempting to force Marichuy to sign a statement that the assault was consensual. When she refused, she was placed in solitary confinement, supposedly for her own protection.
Shortly after New Years, an immigration judge granted Marichuy a bond of $7,500. This means that Marichuy will be released from immigration detention the same day this amount is paid to ICE. Her family has already been able to raise part of the money, but $1,500 is still needed.
Marichuy is a warm, bright and funny woman. She is excited to work and continue her education upon her release. Above all, she is eager to be a leader in the trans migrant community, and can't wait to help organize for the liberation of other trans and queer migrants after she gets out.
Please give whatever you can and share this with as many people as you can so that Marichuy can get free as soon as possible!

En desafío a las normas existentes, Marichuy y otras mujeres trans en la detención migratoria son internadas junto a los hombres. Aunque Marichuy manifestó su preocupación por su seguridad en varias ocasiones, ICE ignoró sus quejas.
En agosto de 2014, su compañero de celda la violó. Después de la violación, ICE intentó forzar a Marichuy a firmar una declaración de que el asalto fue consensual. Cuando se negó a firmar, la trasladaron al confinamiento solitario, supuestamente por su propia protección.
Poco después de Año Nuevo, una jueza de inmigración le concedió una fianza de $7500. Esto significa que Marichuy será liberada de la detención migratoria el mismo día que se entregue esa cantidad a ICE. Su familia ya pudo juntar una parte del dinero, pero todavía faltan unos $1500.
