Memorial & Support ~ Sarah & Alex

Donation protected
Sarah Jean Madson departed this world on Sunday, September 10, 2017, one month exactly after her 37th birthday. Sarah was born at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in the northern California gold country town of Grass Valley, and raised in the next-door quaint town of Nevada City. She is survived by her mother Valerie Jean Madson of Saratoga, California; her brother Alex Gene Madson of Santa Cruz, California; her step-sister Marica Lane of Nevada City; and her step-brother Jonah Lane of Tiburon, California. Sarah's extended family includes seven sets of uncles/aunts and many cousins. She is pre-deceased by her father, Gregory Madson; her uncle Gary Madson; and both sets of grandparents.

After losing her father at a young age, Sarah was never the same. She struggled with addiction and after many years of trying to find her way out of it finally succumbed to an accidental drug overdose. She passed away in Santa Cruz, California, a place she also held very dear to her heart.

Before her trying times, Sarah was well known and loved as an artist and gentle soul. Her interests ranged from waterskiing in her youth, to art and music as an adult. She was a talented artist herself and enjoyed exhibitions of her art in San Francisco and New York. Always a lover of art, literature, and beauty, Sarah moved with the wind and where the wind took her. She lived in Berlin, Germany; San Francisco, New York, Minnesota, Ventura, Santa Cruz and of course her beloved hometown, Nevada City. An effervescent and charismatic soul, Sarah had many friends in all these places. Sarah loved without abandon and accepted people no matter their challenges, or her own.

In addition to this GoFundMe account, we are hosting an event in Sarah's honor, a celebration of life, in her hometown. There we will honor her and raise additional funds. All donated funds will be used to cover minimal costs of the event (facility rental fee, food, drinks), but most importantly, to support Sarah's little brother, Alex, in his own recovery. For those who knew Sarah, you know that there was nothing in this world that she loved more than Alex. She tried for a long time to help him, to be a good example for him, and to protect him after they both lost their dad as kids. Sarah would want nothing more than for us to join together as her community and help her little brother. It is too late for Sarah, but it's not too late for Alex. In Sarah's honor, we gratefully ask for your support.

Funds will be managed by Sarah's childhood friend, China (Buryn) Page, in collaboration with Sarah's family.
