Dear Friends and Family:
First of all, I want to thank all of you for the support you've shown us these past months. The period since Dad’s cancer diagnosis has been an incredibly difficult time for us, as we know it has for many of you, and the support we've received has made it a little bit easier, especially in light of his recent recurrence. The cards and notes you have all sent to let him know you’re thinking about him have done more to lift his spirits than anything else, save for the comfort he feels in having my wonderful Mother consistently at his side.
Mom, Allison, Jonathan and I have given a lot of thought to how those of us who love Dad can do something big to show him that his kindness and humility have touched the lives of all those who know and love him.
Dad is a big believer in the importance of girls education. He considers it one of the most urgent needs of our time. My parents are also big believers in a place called Darrow School, in upstate NY, for the amazing experience and opportunities it gave Jonathan and I.
We have therefore decided to commemorate Dad’s lifelong generosity by creating a scholarship fund at Darrow in his name. “The Keith Norman Holt Scholarship Fund” will provide an annual gift to a female student with financial need. It will be an endowed fund, with appreciation paying the annual award, which means it will exist for a very very long time. For perspective: I received a similar award in 1991 which was created in 1967. It exists to this day, almost 50 years later. So know that the support you provide will ensure that a student in need receives an opportunity that Dad believes in, not just once but every single year...for decades. But we need your help.
Here’s the hard part: the minimum to create such a fund is $100,000. We know it won’t be easy to raise this amount of money, but Dad’s gentle spirit has affected the lives of so many over the years. We truly believe if we all pull together we can do it.
Please help us make this possible for him. Much more important than how much you give is our being able to show him a list of all the friends and loved ones who have come together to honor him when we surprise him with the news. It will mean the world to him.
