Please help save the historic First Lutheran Church of Gypsum!
Over the past three years, this church has grown greatly in faith and in local ministries. Giving and overall income has greatly increased as has attendance and membership. At the same time, the savings has decreased to cover the difference. We believe that, given another year or two, the church will continue its growth and become financially self sufficient.
For a small church, we have a huge impact on the community, providing food for high risk families in need through our Brown Bag program. We assist and participate in many local efforts to better our community and we host groups like AA and 4H in our historic space.
Many churches do these things or similar but not all can afford to continue the same way they always have. Here in Gypsum there are three primary reasons we need to push forward as we are and we need your help doing it.
1. History - The building is on the National Register of historic places and was built in 1890. Unusual at the time, it was founded to be used by many denominations and churches who had no other place to worship. The congregation has strong historical ties, including to President Teddy Roosevelt, who hunted in the area during his presidency and had two hunting guides who were members of the church.
2. Theology - The theology of this church and the ELCA, the denomination it is a part of, is special. Everyone is welcome and loved here no matter what. This message of grace, that there is nothing you have done or failed to do that can separate you from the love of God and this community is central to who we are. And that who you are is good enough, no matter what. There will not be judging here.
3. Geography - Along the I-70 corridor, there just aren't a lot of churches that share that unconditional grace. We can't afford to lose any churches that love and accept people right where they are.
