Keeping Families Together

Meet Dyretta—Before going to PLM Families Together, Dyretta was living in a hotel room with her son. After five-years of steady employment and increased responsibility with one company, a change in management left Dyretta with no income, rent past due, and eventually an eviction.

While at PLM, Dyretta lived in a Short-term Housing apartment, searched diligently for a new job and met weekly with her Mentor Advocate to set goals and keep moving forward. She also enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Psychology/Organizational Development. Through negotiations with a landlord, she was given a lease. PLM Families Together provided assistance for the deposit and rent. Almost immediately following the move to her new apartment, Dyretta found a job. Living under her own lease, she continued to work with her Mentor Advocate for a year to help keep her on the path to independence.

Today, Dyretta has maintained her housing, is still employed, continues her schooling, and loves to brag about her son’s honor-roll status in high school.

“It took me six months to unpack my bags and finally put things on the walls because I couldn’t believe I was actually there to stay,” Smith told me. “Now I tell my son, put posters on the walls, anything you want. We’re home.”

She’s been able to buy a car, and she even serves as a member of the Board of Directors for PLM Families Together. She talks with determination and ambition as she describes her hopes to be a counselor once she has finished her degree program.

Donations raised during our campaign will go to help people like Dyretta get on their feet.
