Hello,
My name is Melissa Thorndike and I am the founder and head of the board for a nonprofit called The Enchanted Stables. The purpose of The Enchanted Stables is to provide a safe place in our community for kids and teens to come and learn about horses and what it takes to care for them. Our target audience is at risk youth and children with special needs. Both demographics desperately need a place where they can go and be accepted, needed and not worry about people judging them because of their age. While I worked as an Instructional Assistant in Special Education with the Antioch School District I had the pleasure of working with the youth in our area. My favorite years were spent at Antioch High School where I had the pleasure of getting past the rough and tough exterior and getting to know the people behind them. Let me tell you, there are some amazing kids in our area that are hiding out as thugs and gang members. I truly believe that the answer to our communities biggest problem actually lies with the kids and teens that we are first to blame when things go wrong. I am aware that there are some who The Enchanted Stables won’t be able to save, but I can guarantee you that it won’t be from lack of effort. My vision is to have the able bodied at risk youth come and help maintain the facility and care for the horses while also having the opportunity to learn to ride as well as watch how horses impact the lives of those who are developmentally disabled. I want these kids to know that they play an important roll in something meaningful, something that has a positive impact on others and their community. To make this happen, I need your help. On June 2nd, The Enchanted Stables was recognized by the state of California as a nonprofit organization. Now we’re ready to do fundraising and accept 100% tax deductible donations. All monetary donations will be used for the adoption fee, board, vet care and training for our first therapy horse, Player (www.facebook.com/TheEnchantedStables for pictures and videos). I hope to have a small facility of our own in the Antioch area by the middle to end of 2016. While I am determined to have this dream come to fruition, I can’t do it alone. If we come together as a community we can all reap the rewards of having something like this in our area, helping our youth and helping to better our community by association.
