From my daughter to you....
My name is Gabriella but my friends call me Brie or Gabby. I am a senior at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. Yes, the same school from Remember the Titans featuring Denzel Washington.
I was raised solely by my mother (with the exception of my maternal grandma and granny). My dad has never been a constant in my life. He only comes around whenever it's good for him. My mom works two jobs to make sure all of our needs and some of our wants are met. I also work as much as I can to help mom with some of my expenses because I know she can't do it all on her own. And though I've asked, my dad doesn't seem to want or care about contributing to further my education.
I have taken Honors classes since middle school and throughout high school. Just this year, I have taken AP classes and have done well. Currently, my GPA is a 3.2 out of 4.0, but it would have been much higher had I not had such a rough freshmen year. During this time, I dealt with being bullied by people I thought were my friends. The bullying left me depressed, stressed and filled with social anxiety and anger. All I wanted to do was end my life and my grades eventually suffered that year. I wanted to end my life and my grades suffered greatly. Despite what I went through, my mom has always been my #1 cheerleader - always there to support me despite my anger, rage, and frustration. Since then, mom has sought counseling for me and it has been the best thing for me and I have a part-time job after school and volunteer in the nursery at my church.
In June 2014, I will be graduating with an Advanced High School Diploma and wish to pursue a double major in pediatric nursing and psychology. I have applied to 7 colleges of which I receive acceptance to all of them. As to which school I will attend, I have decided to stay close to home so avoid the cost of room/board, but even with this saving, paying for school will be VERY expensive for my mom and I. I have applied for both financial aid as well as various scholarships but these funds still will not pay for everything.
I hope you would find it in your heart to donate ANYTHING towards attending a local university or community college so I can remain at home and continue to work while I go to school even if it's only to pay for books for one semester.
