What has been happening to the Rohingya?

Described as the world’s most persecuted people: 1.1 million Rohingya people live in Myanmar. They live predominately in Rakhine state, where they have co-existed uneasily alongside Buddhists for decades.

The Rohingya are reviled by many in Myanmar as illegal immigrants and they suffer from systematic discrimination. The Myanmar government treats them as stateless people, denying them citizenship. Stringent restrictions have been placed on Rohingya people’s freedom of movement, access to medical assistance, education and other basic rights.

Violence broke out in northern Rakhine state on 25 August, 2017, when militants attacked government forces. In response, security forces, supported by Buddhist militia. launched a “clearance operation” that has killed at least 1,000 people and forced more than 500,000 to flee their homes. The UN’s top human rights official warned that Myanmar’s treatment of its Rohingya minority appears to be a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

How will your money help?

All the funds collected will go directly to Rohingya refugees. Given the scale of the crisis and chaos on the ground we have identified a Scottish Registered NGO World Care Foundation who works in Bangaldesh for Rohingya refugees. In partnership with the Council of Bangladeshis in Scotland, all money raised will be given to the World Care Foundation whose local teams will be carrying out all projects.  The Chair of ELREC, Foysol Choudhury MBE will be responabile for making the donation to the World Care Foundation.  The money will go towards providing toilets, water wells, medical camps, shelters, emergency aid kit, and showers. A final report on how the money has been used will be presented to all donors and will be available on this page. You can find more about the work of the World Care Foundation on their website: http://www.worldcarefoundation.org/campaign/burma-rohingya-appeal/
