Duane is a fun-loving, caring father and husband. He has always been an artist, putting his talent to use in design and construction. With these skills he built Doctor Signs, a small sign company in Heath, Ohio that he owns and operates out of his home. What makes Duane a truly successful businessman is his outgoing, friendly personality. While he devotes most of his waking hours to his business, he is active in local government and volunteers his time at the local animal shelter. His “Buddy”, a German Shepard who he adopted a few years ago, is lost without him. His entire family is lost without him.
Duane had a hemorrhagic stroke in his cerebellum on December 17th, 2014. He was taken to the James Center at OSU where they performed a life-saving surgery to remove a piece of his occipital bone to give his brain room to swell. He then spent 21 days in the Neuro ICU. We had very little hope at the beginning that he would recover, as the scans of his brain showed significant damage. But Duane is a fighter. One day after another he showed unexpected signs of improvement. He woke up within the first week and started responding to us with his eyes. By week two he was able to move his head and squeeze our hands when we asked him to. He has since had some ups and downs but his long-term outlook is good – if he can get the physical therapy he will need.
Currently, Duane is in the University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Funds will be used to get him set up in a nursing facility where he can receive the physical therapy he needs and to keep his business going until he can get back to it, and help take care of medical bills from the past couple months. Many weeks/months of therapy are going to be necessary to get him on the right track. With all of these expenses being out of pocket from family and loved-ones, this is going to be a very difficult time.
We are asking for any donations to help Duane receive the care and physical therapy he needs to give him every opportunity to recover. Duane was never one to ask for help- while he was always offering a helping hand. We ask that you help him out in his time of need.
We all miss him dearly. We miss him whistling while he works and his contagious smile. Please help us get him back!
