DougTrails Cross-Country Tour

Traumatic Brain Injury is a horrible way to lose your mind. 25-year-old Philadelphia school-teacher Doug Markgraf would know - on May 31, 2006, he was involved in a hit-and-run accident while riding his bicycle in a bike lane in West Philadelphia. In the collision, Doug shattered bones, helmet, bicycle - and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Lying in a coma for half a month, doctors refused to acknowledge that his condition would allow anything similar to a complete recovery. And, the last thing they ever expected was that he would awaken, recover, complete his studies at Drexel University, and return to the bike. But, he did. And now he wants to inspire other TBI patients/survivors, and surprise everyone.

Beginning June 27 2011, Doug will ride across the continental United States in hopes of ensuring that inspiration is visible for as many survivors and families as possible. He will visit traumatic brain injury rehabilitation centers, support groups, and organizations in cities along his route, speaking with doctors, patients, and families about exceeding their own goals and expectations.

Other goals of his mission? To raise awareness about TBI and its effects, as well as to raise funds for an initiative with similar goals, the Raisin Hope Foundation. During the summer, he'll update his blog, http://dougtrails.wordpress.com about the journey.

Doug says, \"We all can do amazing things.\" Please help him and other TBI survivors be reminded of this!

The money collected will go towards a number of things related to my mission:

1. It will make sure that I can safely ride across the continental US, helping pay for bike repairs, food, and emergency expenses such as medicine or hotel lodging (only when absolutely positively necessary).

2. The Raisin Hope Foundation will receive funds from donors, making it so that TBI survivors and those recovering can get the absolute best recovery possible. Also, this organization funds research to make TBI better understood.

3. A documentary is being made about my mission, being created by Scott Richardson of June TwentySeven Film/Video Productions - help is definitely necessary to allow for production and filming to happen.

Supporters can also help by visiting dougtrails.wordpress.com and telling everyone they can!
