The end of single use coffee cups.

Hi All,

My name is Dylan Kuipersmith. The Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia is my home.

We have a worldwide over-consumption and waste problem. I am dedicated to finding ongoing solutions and creating awareness and social change.

This is my partner Kim and I after a beach clean up last year in the Whitsunday Islands, inshore of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia.

Here's a time lapse video of our CCW crew cleaning up all the litter and single use items from a Woolworths car park:

Here I am in Myanmar last year teaching a local man that picking up litter is important:

Here is an article that the Gold Coast Bulletin ran in 2015:

I now pledge to you one pragmatic solution that will assist in detracting from our single-use coffee cup mentality (with free coffee).

Our worldwide problem:
Our society has a massive "single use" mentality. Every hour, tens of thousands of single use coffee cups are sent to landfill. This is a problem that affects all of us, plus our children’s generation, and I feel responsibility to illicit change. This is a pic of the bin full of single-use coffee cups at my local (Fishermans Road, Maroochydore) farmers markets:

My dedication to finding ongoing solutions:
Encourage social change within society, and encourage people to change their "single use" habits with positive reinforcement (and in this case, free coffee).

One pragmatic solution / what happens next: - I raise $1,000 via Go Fund Me.
- I meet with cafe owners on the Sunshine Coast (where I live) such as CK, Columbia, Coffee Club, YoYo Espresso, Compound Espresso, etc. I offer them a deal that goes like this:
- I pre-purchase $1,000 worth of coffees. At $5/coffee, that's 200 coffees.
- I contact the local radio station. On a Saturday morning at 7:50am, they broadcast to their listeners that in 10 minutes time (at 8am), a TBC cafe will be giving away 200 coffees FOR FREE to the first 200 customers who arrive with their own reusable coffee cup. Yes - someone proves that they are setting a good example by BYO’ing their own reusable coffee cup, and they get a free coffee for their environmental do-gooding. Happy days.
- I will be standing there to greet them personally at the counter.
- After this event is a success, rinse and repeat. After the first event, I will have communicated to 200 people directly that using their reusable coffee cup is beneficial to their lives (free coffee). And to another 200+ (of coffee shop bystanders and observers) that using single use cups doesn't impact their lives in a positive way (no free coffee).

Here's a pic of Kim using her reusable beverage cup while camping at Wooyung, NSW last month:

Why does this event matter?
Several reasons:
- This communicates to the public that when you use a reusable beverage cup, you get rewarded (in this case, with free coffee).
- It also communicates to the public that if you DO NOT use a reusable coffee cup (and are still stuck in the past using single use cups) that you WILL NOT be rewarded for your actions. Clearly, reusable cups are the way forward.
- Via the radio station broadcast, it gives reusable coffee cups a solid bit of good publicity. Even if you can't make it to the cafe to get your free coffee, you'll still be thinking quite highly about using reusable cups, the status of "reusable" will increase, and the status of "single-use" will diminish.
- Every person that claims a free coffee with his or her BYO cup will start to get an email from me every Tuesday called 3-Shot Tuesday. "3-Shot Tuesday" is my free weekly email (very concise, made up of 3 bullet points aka "shots") where I'll show my readers what I've been doing to reduce my waste and consumption for that week, and continually reinforces ongoing positive
environmental behavior.

What does 3-Shot Tuesday do?
- Provides encouragement to incorporate habits, routines and tools that reduce consumption and waste.
- Acts as a soft "reminder" to integrate eco-friendly practices into their lives.
- Communicates novel and practical ideas.
- Provides a support network.
- Communicates directly to listeners that they're not alone in their journey of reducing their impact on the world.

You can read more about 3-Shot Tuesday here:

Note: I don't get paid for this. I've travelled the World and have seen the rubbish that exists everywhere. I have given myself the responsibility to take action and to encourage positive social change. It's my mission to do whatever I can to help others to reduce their waste and consumption and in-turn lessen their impact on our environment.

Your donation will be used to:
- Fund free coffees.
- Encourage the use of reusable beverage cups.
- Assist in wiping out single use coffee cups.
- Create lasting social change for environmental good.

Thank you all.

I hope to see you at the cafe for free coffee on a future Saturday at 8am.

Sincerely, Dylan.
