Who are The Smoot's?
T.J. and Megan Smoot, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA, regularly travel to rural Jamaica to work in conjunction with the Bluefields community on various projects.
The Projects
In August, the husband and wife duo will lead another work team to Jamaica, to rebuild the Bluefields Community Centre. The Centre is the hub of local community activities, commerce, education and more. It houses the Friendly Fisherman's Society offices (many local men are fishermen), and Cotta Craft Shop (a place of employment for local women), along with rentable meeting facilities for hosting educational workshops, youth groups and other types of meetings.
Currently, the Centre's roof and meeting room are both in a state of disrepair. The roof is rotting and needs replacing with a zinc (metal) roof. The meeting room concrete flooring is also in bad condition and needs to be refurbished, along with refreshing the interior with new paint. The completion of both the roof and meeting room projects will ensure more future use can be had in this space, which is such a vital part of the Bluefields community.
How Will My Donation Be Used?
The Smoot's have set a personal fundraising goal of $7500 to enable them to offset a portion of both their out-of-pocket travel expenses (15% of total funds raised) and the cost of materials required to refurbish the Centre (85% of funds raised). Dollars raised will also be used to purchase the various levels of rewards directly from the craftspeople, at their asking price, to ensure sustainable support of the crafting community.
Your donation is tax-deductible, as "Building Jamaica" is a international mission project of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, Inc., a 501c3 organization. A reciept showing confirmation of donation will be mailed to the address you input once it is recieved, for tax purposes.

The Smoot's founded "Building Jamaica" in 2009 to bring work teams to Jamaica to build knowledge, shelter and faith, from the ground up and to be more intential in bringing communities of people together.
