Devault Foods and Octo Design have combined efforts to build awareness to the devastation in Baton Rouge and to raise funds to rebuild a community.
On August 12th sever rains began to fall causing river banks and levies to be compromised. Rains continued through this last weekend (Aug 20-21). The Baton Rouge Area Chamber of Commerce released a preliminary report on Friday, August 19th summarizing damage; More than 110,000 homes (or 31% of the homes in the region) are in flood areas. This early report estimates that 7,364 businesses employing 73,907 individuals are flood-effected. The estimated cost of recovery is at $30 Billion and growing! As a point of comparison, recovery costs for Hurricane Katrina were $16.3B; Super Storm Sandy in New Jersey were $8.3 B; and Hurricane Ike in Texas were $1.6B.
These floods are unprecedented and being described as a 1,000 year flood. We are asking that you partner with us to raise funds for the recovery effort. Funds will be distributed through a local agency, Baton Rouge Area Foundation and Heritage Ranch, nonprofit, working ranch for troubled boys.
Over the coming weeks, there will be extensive demolition and assessment. Insurance adjustors are on the ground but telling residents that it will be 2 months before claims are settled. Municipal trash removal has reported that it will 90 days before any demo debris or trash can be removed from down town or suburban areas.
Please join us in sending messages of hope, love and encouragement to the Baton Rouge community. We have sent people to the area to begin outreach and repair. Thanks to our generous friends at Devault Foods, over 50 cases of food have landed in Baton Rouge. Make-shift BBQs began today to help residents and relief workers. There is so much more that we can do with your help.
