This fundraiser is to benefit my friend Natalie. She's the mother of six children, ages 19-7, and her military husband is on the deploy list for 2016. [ETA: He has since been removed from the list.]
Natalie was diagnosed with breast cancer and recently had a double mastectomy. She was reassured by the doctor about any doubts she may have had about the decision to have the double procedure (with cancer on only one side) when she tested positive for a gene called CHEK2. This gene is associated with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS), which is a hereditary cancer predisposition syndrome. Breast cancer is among the most common cancer types found in families with this syndrome.
Natalie had more bad news when they found cancer in three of five of the sentinel nodes, which means it could have spread to her whole lymph system. Since they found cancer in the sentinel nodes, they removed all the lymph nodes on the affected side. They got six more nodes, and fortunately only one of those showed any cancer, with the right side completely normal.
Natalie has just started months of chemotherapy. Wednesday, July 29th was her first day of the next step in this long journey. Please consider donating to help offset some of her family's expenses. While I'd love to see even more, if we hit a thousand dollars, I plan to dye my hair pink and if we hit $2500, I will shave my head (and post pics!)! Any amount is appreciated!
