Help me ask out Taylor Swift

Donation protected
How would you ask out a celebrity when they don't even know you exist?
How would you set yourself apart from the crowd?
How would you get your message noticed?

I have determined that the only logical answer to all those questions is, "Write their name in the sky." In my case, this celebrity happens to be the ever wonderful, Taylor Swift.

Wouldn't it be convenient if I could just bump into Taylor at a local coffee shop or at the gym and be able to work up the courage to ask her out? Well, since she doesn't live in Utah and I don't currently have a gym membership, my chances of that happening are approximately equal to Utah starting its own lottery and then me winning it. So I need to get her attention another way. And I need you to help me get there. With your help, I will team up with Airsign to use skywriting to ask Taylor out on a date when she comes to Utah on September 4th.

Unfortunately, skywriting isn't cheap. In fact, it's outright ridiculously expensive. I am committed to having this skywriting take place but I am not committed to selling everything I own just to have it happen.

Do you think it is just happenstance that she is coming to Salt Lake City for one of her tour dates, and I live in Salt Lake City? I most certainly do not!

Still on the fence? You, my friend, are in luck then as I have painstakingly compiled this extensive list of FAQs to answer the questions that I have been frequently asked or that you may ask me frequently.

FAQs

Are you a crazed fan, creepy stalker, or any other negatively descriptive name?
I find Taylor to be an attractive, beautiful young woman. From what I have seen, she has a good head on her shoulders and a fun personality to boot. I'm not a "fan" of her music. I don’t mean that I hate it, I just mean that I don’t know her songs outside of what is played repeatedly on every radio station ever and subsequently gets stuck in my head. She is a talented songwriter, but I don't drive around town rocking out to "Shake it Off" or "22" in my car.

I want to ask out Taylor Swift the person, not Taylor Swift the artist.

The best way to get to know someone or learn something about them is to ask them yourself or find out firsthand. There is almost nothing I want to learn about Taylor that I can read on a website or from a magazine interview. I want to learn more about her directly from her, not from what I read online.

So, basically we're donating to you so that you can ask out your celebrity crush in an expensive way?
Technically, yes. But let's look at this another way. You're paying for some guy in Utah (me) to hire a skywriting company to ask out a girl who just happens to be Taylor Swift. If you don't find that even a tiny bit funny/entertaining, I feel really bad for you.

Is the goal REALLY $x,xxx? Skytyping sounds more expensive than that!
I am adjusting the goal periodically in short burts (usually $1,000 each time) because any amount received is appreciated and I will use all money donated in some way to ask out Taylor on a date. There are multiple different services available from Airsign. The top goal is for Skytyping as that is what I really hope to be able to have done. There are more details about the Skytyping specifics below. The Skytyping will cost roughly $60,000 so at that point I would stop expanding the goal as anything above that amount will be donated as outlined below.

What happens if you don't meet the goal?
If the top end goal is not met, I have set up smaller contingency plans just in case. The top goal includes multiple flights/writings throughout the day. It is less for 5 writings and even less to just fly a banner sign. Worst case scenario, I will stand outside the concert wearing one of the shirts. All excess money will go to charity as outlined further down the page.

What if it's overcast that day?
If Mother Nature wakes up on the wrong side of the bed then skywriting may not be visible or the weather may not be good enough for the fine folks at Airsign to be ok with flying. This leads us to...

What if the skywriting flight is canceled?
On Sept 5th and 6th Taylor will be in Denver, CO. If the weather in Salt Lake City doesn't cooperate then we will attempt to relocate the planes to Denver and perform the Skytyping there instead. If both SLC and Denver flights do not happen due to weather, I will be given a full refund by Airsign. If the full refund happens then I will be donating the money to charity as illustrated a little further down the page.

What happens if you earn MORE than the goal?
I am not doing this for profit or personal gain other than the obvious "gain" of asking Taylor out and her potentially agreeing. So while anything above the goal could go to more flights throughout the day resulting in more times the message is written, or upgrading to fly a blimp instead (imagine the Goodyear blimp), I have decided that anything above the top goal, or in any excess above whatever tier of service we can reach, will be donated to a charity of Taylor and I agree upon. So she better let me know which one. ;)

What if Taylor Swift says "no" to you?
This is 100% possible and, to be fair, is just as likely to happen as her saying "yes." I do not expect her to agree to a date. She is a person and has free will just like me and you. Just because I was able to crowd fund enough money to have her name written in the sky and have some shirts made, shouldn't mean I just automatically get a date.

What if Taylor doesn't like you?
Just like the question before, this is 100% possible and I have no expectations. In that same regard, I can’t guarantee that once we meet that I will even like her! I mean, what if she chews with her mouth open or insists that Mr. Pib is better than Dr. Pepper? Talk about deal breakers, man.

Why do this then?
Because it's fun, makes for a great story, and, most importantly, I won't really know unless I try. I want to open Schrödinger's box to check on his, possibly poisoned and/or dead, cat. I want to hear a tree fall in a forest and tell people "It made a sound. I know, because I was there!"

What if she doesn't see it?
Really? It’s her name, in the sky. Please tell me, with a straight face, you wouldn't notice something like that if it were your name. At the very least you'd have a friend/family member point it out to you.

$62,000 is a lot of money. How do we know you won't take our money and go out and buy a new car?
Because buying a new car won't ask out Taylor Swift. I know it won’t because I bought a new car 2 years ago and here we are now, working on asking her out. Plus, if I did want another car, a new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS would cost a lot more than $62,000.

What will the message in the sky say?
This is going to depend on how much is raised to first determine which service we are able to afford. Each service (I.e. Skytyping, skywriting, banner towing, helicopter banner, blimp, etc) has a different cost associated with it as well as a maximum number of characters.

If enough money is raised the Skytyping will read "Taylor Swift will you go out with me?" As can be seen in my amazingly photoshopped picture at the top of this page. This message will be written a total of 5 times throughout the day with a total of 5 other messages written that will be the URL to my Facebook page . I can't have anyone trying to claim credit for asking her out!

Why do I have to give my shipping address when I donate?
To ease the shipping process for the shirt rewards, I have opted to require that you enter a shipping address when you donate. This will make things much easier for me when it comes to getting you these shirts.

If you donate less than the $40 reward level you are more than welcome to enter a fake address or an address that doesn't belong to you. I won't be using it either way.

If I donate at least $40, how do I tell you which size t-shirt to send me?
When you are donating $40 or more, PLEASE include your desired shirt size and specify if you would prefer the ladies cut style in the comments of the donation. (i.e. "Shirt: Small") If you don't specify that you want the ladies style shirt I will be defaulting to the unisex/men's style.

If a shirt size is not specified in the comments of your donation then I will make one attempt to email you to ask which size shirt you want or to clarify if you do not want the shirt at all. You may also email me from the same email you donated with. Please include the date you donated, your name, and desired shirt size.

Available sizes as well as sizing information can be found here  for unisex sizes and here  for ladies style sizes.

I already donated but now I want to donate again so that my total donation is $40 or more. I want the shirt! Will this qualify me?
Of course you get a shirt if your total donation amount is $40 or more regardless of how many donations it takes to get there. I would only ask that on your donation where you have reached or exceeded the $40 total amount that you make sure to enter a valid address, specify which shirt size, and list the date(s) of the prior donations. The last one will simplify my search through past donations.

Please ensure that you are using the same name AND email address for each donation. If these do not match then I cannot verify that it was you who donated both times.

I want more than one shirt for myself/a friend/family member/total stranger. Is this possible?
For every $40 donated you are eligible for one t-shirt reward in the size of your choosing. So if you donate $40-$79 you get one, $80-$119 you can get two, and so on.

If you are donating enough to qualify for more than one shirt and you actually want more than one shirt, you need to specify this and list both desired sizes. Otherwise I will always default to one shirt per donation of $40 or higher.

Example:
$80 donation.
Comment-
1st shirt size: small
2nd shirt size: medium (ladies)

How long after donating can I expect to receive my shirt?
Instead of waiting for the campaign to end, the shirts will be made to order and shipped as soon as possible. To ease the printing process due to set up time, etc. I will be able doing batches of shirts roughly once per month. This means that, depending on when you donate and when the last batch was made, it could be up to 6-7 weeks (including shipping) before you receive your shirt(s). I will be doing everything I can to get them to you as soon as humanly possible.

Where will you ship the shirts?
All shirts can only be shipped in the United States.

Sorry, international donors, just know I love you just as much and I will try and figure out a way to reward you for your generosity. If you want to come to Utah to pick one up, I would be happy to try and arrange that. While that seems a tad silly, it's your money and I would love to meet you, personally thank you and give you your shirt over a cup of coffee or your beverage of choice.

Before you rush off to click that "Donate Now" button on my page, I urge you to review other campaigns on this site as well and consider donating to them first. There are other people out there who could use the money for more noble reason's than fulfilling a dream to ask out their celebrity crush.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask below or write me via Facebook. I will also update this FAQ as needed.  Thank you!
