Tokyo Training/Traveling Costs

My name is Monica Aksamit. I have been fencing for 15 years now. I have always dreamed of making the Olympic Team, and recently I accomplished that dream. Fencing is a sport that has competitions that are all over the world, which makes the sport very expensive.

In the past I have made national teams of all levels, starting from Under 17, to Under 20 and even the Senior National Team. I attended Penn State University and won 2 NCAA team championships with my fellow teammates. During my career my most notable result was from the 2008 World Championships where my team and I won a silver medal in the team event.

For training I commute into manhattan 5 days a week which means that financially it only makes sense to purchase a monthly train ticket. This monthly ticket costs me $421.00. Before we depart for the Olympics on July 30 I still have 4 entire months of preparation. As I am training full time, I don't have the ability to work and make money.
