Jane Haines' Medical Bills

Donation protected
On October 6th, 2013, my mother was admitted to KU Medical Center after collapsing at her work at our church's nursery. It took the doctors there several days to realize that she was having several small strokes on both sides of her brain. These are not the first strokes she has had - our family has a history of strokes, and my mom's first one was when I was in the 5th grade. These strokes, however, were the most damaging.

My mom was hospitalized for a month, while I was left to take care of our house, make sure I had enough money to pay bills, and continue my schooling at UMKC - all while worried that I would never get my mother back. After leaving KU, she stayed at Trinity Nursing and Rehab, and the wonderful staff there helped her get back on track. The stroke really affected her left side, making her weak and unable to even sit up on her own, let alone stand or walk. Her speech was slurred for quite a while, and she had difficulty holding things. The rehab therapists at Trinity never gave up on her, and worked with her every day until she was finally able to take her first steps on Christmas Eve.

My mom has fought hard to get her mobility back, both at Trinity and then at Mid-America Rehab Hospital. She was officially discharged and was allowed to come home on March 7th, 2014 - after being away for 5 months. She continues to work with PT and OT and can get around with the help of a walker. She's still not as agile as she was before these strokes, but she has been getting closer to normal every day. Her determination to get better and continue to improve has really inspired me.

Unfortunately, her stays at these places has cost us a lot of money. My mom is on disability and does have health insurance, but it doesn't cover anything. She currently has an outstanding balance of $5,577.18 for all her medical bills combined, and we just don't have the money to pay them off. Her disability income is barely enough to cover utilities and living expenses, let alone pay off this debt. I am so close to finishing my bachelor's degree, and I know that if I drop out of school now to work full time, I will probably never return to earn my degree. We're able to pay off a little bit each month, but at the rate we're able to, we won't be fully paid off until June of 2017.

This is why we are asking for your help. We would like to get this paid off as soon as possible, both to eliminate stress in our already very stressful lives, and also so those that helped my mother on her road to recovery receive the payment that they deserve.

Any little bit helps, and even just spreading the word of this campaign is a real help to us. Thank you so much for taking the time to read, to donate, and to share - we are forever appreciative of your help!
