Think back to your kindergarten days. What are your best, most vivid memories? Painting and gluing? Beads, blocks, games, and books? Mine too! And why wouldn’t they be…that was all fun stuff!
In today’s kindergarten classroom, we’re even teaching kids to read. To accelerate learning, we encourage kids to read “leveled” books. Leveled books match a child’s reading skills, so books are challenging enough that the student makes progress, but not so difficult that kids end up frustrated. No one is left out. Every child improves!
I am very excited about these leveled library books and want to include them in my curriculum this coming fall. But, my Washington, D.C. public elementary school can’t afford them and my teacher’s salary couldn’t even cover all my classroom expenses last year.
My kids are bright, energetic, and wonderful children who do the very best they can under trying financial circumstances at home. With the right tools, they will become lifelong readers and learners.
Will you be a bookworm hero and help them out? My goal is just $500. This is for an expansive leveled library that I’ll use each year so that all my students can practice reading books at their own level. And with your help, I will also purchase other classroom materials and various supplies we use such as crayons, markers, and comfortable cushions for a reading corner.
If only you could see their faces light up as they learn to read for themselves. You can create hope for some very young kids in tough situations through the world of books.
