My name is Kalysha and I am a rising senior in Zoology at NC State University. I am the Vice-President of Roots and Shoots, a wildlife conservation club at NC State. I have also received my Visionary Leader and Leadership In Action certificates from NC State and my Wildlife Rehabilitation certificate from the Western NC Nature Center.
After graduating in spring of 2015, I hope to get a job as a conservation biologist, conducting research that focuses on increasing biodiversity and preservation of habitats.
I have an amazing opportunity to conduct research this summer on chipmunks in Mt. Graham, AZ as part of an ongoing research study at University of Arizona. The research studies individual characteristics (increased aggression, activity, etc.) of chipmunks and aims to discover how those traits influence dispersal. The two focuses are 1) how far individuals travel to disperse and 2) whether they choose to settle in a habitat similar to or different from their natal site.
The internship is paid minimum wage and offers housing while research is being conducted on Mt. Graham. However, the research schedule is 10 days on and 4 days off, leaving me without housing for four days every two weeks. This amounts to approximately 20 days without housing during the summer. The internship also does not support travel or food.
With that being said, I need your help! I am a low-income, first-generation college student and am trying to make my dreams come true.
Below is my approximate budget for the summer. Any help you can provide is invaluable.
$500 - Housing for 20 days
$200 - Food costs for 10 weeks
$1000 - Airfare*
$100 - Materials

*My baby sister graduates from high school in June and I would not miss it for anything in the world. I have to make two round trip flights to/from Arizona: one for the entire summer and another to come back and see my baby sister graduate.
