UNM CoN Medical Volunteer Trip to Kenya

Donation protected
Jambo! (Hello-in Swahili) My name is Yeshemabet Turner and I am a Level 3 Nursing Student at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing. This year I was selected to embark on a rural clinical experience in Kenya through the College of Nursing. Along with 7 of my classmates and our clinical instructor, Judith Harris, we will be traveling to the village of Oyugis, Kenya on October 11, 2014 for a two-week medical trip.

We will be going under the auspices of Project Helping Hands, a non-profit organization based in the United States. During our two weeks in Kenya we will be staffing a makeshift health clinic. The clinic was initiated by the Wa Wa Ti, a group of women in the community who founded the clinic following the deaths of their husbands and children due to HIV/AIDS. During our stay, we will be working as a team alongside other medical professionals from Project Helping Hands, to help run the health clinic. We will be treating children, adults, and older adults with many different health conditions. Our primary focus is to provide general health care and health education services to the people of Oyugis,Kenya.

Through this trip I will have the golden opportunity of travelling to Africa and fulfill a passion I've nurtured for a long time. I have a strong desire to travel the world and help people empower themselves through health care.

By choosing to support me on this journey your contribution will significantly impact the village of Oyugis, Kenya. Many people in Oyugis have not had adequate healthcare since the last medical team was there, so most gather outside the clinic overnight in order to be seen. On past trips, the students have provided health care to more than 500 people each day. The village does not have access to motor vehicle transportation, medicine or medical supplies, so our presence in this village is vital. At sunrise each morning we will hike three miles to set up our health clinic to assess and treat the area residents.

The cost for each student is $3700, which covers a round-trip flight, housing and transportation for the two-week trip. Each student is also responsible for bringing 50 pounds worth of medical supplies. The funds you donate will go towards my full trip cost and medical supplies. If you are interested in donating to the cause you can receive a tax credit for the donation by doing the following: Go to the web site, http://www.Project-Helping-Hands.org and you'll see a DONATION icon. Enter the amount you'd like to donate and when you're asked enter details for the donation, enter my full name on the "Oyugis, Kenya October 2014" trip. Project Helping Hands (under the auspices of the Dakotan Fund) will send you a receipt, verifying your donation to the non-profit. If you make a donation via PHH, I ask that you let me know so I can have a record of your contribution also. If you provide any type of support I would love to provide you with a copy of a short video and pictures highlighting our experiences in Kenya.

We greatly appreciate all of the support we receive from the community and individual donors. If you have any questions or need further information, do not hesitate to contact me. If you can or can't contribute monetary funds to support me, you can still help in a huge way by sharing this campaign with others you may know that may want to support me on this amazing journey.

Thank you for the consideration :)
