The Canada-Belgium Dance Exchange Project Summer 2015

SCYDA has begun fundraising efforts to support DSdanse to participate in a cultural exchange with Cie Ph/f/ase, a youth dance company from Gistel, Belgium, which has like-minded artistic values and objectives. Cie Ph/f/ase, under the direction of Saskia Goetghebeur, also has both a senior and junior company, Cie Ph/f/ase senior aged 15 + and Junior Cie aged 12 "“ 16. The cultural exchange is being planned for the summer of 2015, with Cie Ph/f/ase visiting the Sunshine Coast for 10 days beginning July 24 and DSdanse visiting Belgium for 10 days starting August 6th, 2015. DSdanse will perform a full-length show in Gistel and also participate in joint performances with Cie Ph/f/ase in neighbouring communities including an event planned for the "Last Post at Menin Gate" in Ypres.

In 2015 Belgium will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of Second Battle of Ypres which marked the Canadians' first major engagement in World War I. "The Canadian Division's trial-by-fire at Ypres earned the Canadians a reputation as tough and dependable troops, but they had paid a high price: some 6,000 casualties over the four-day battle". Every night at 8.00pm (20:00 hours) a moving cere- mony takes place under the Menin Gate in Ieper - Ypres. The Last Post Ceremony has become part of the daily life in Ieper (Ypres) and the local people are proud of this simple but moving tribute to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence of their town. SCYDA dancers will study this historical event and will choreograph a memorial piece.

Canada-Belgium Dance Exchange Planning,
Preparation, and Fundraising Education

The next year and a half will be devoted to preparing dance pieces that contain Canadian influenced material including Canadian composers and folklore. The youth dancers will be creating a memorial piece involving the study of World War I events and history. Field trips to Flanders Fields and other Canadian memorial sites are also being planned for the youth dancers during their stay in Belgium.

Fund Raising

SCYDA began fundraising efforts early in appreciation that traveling to Belgium would be no easy feat. To date $31,000 has been raised. The goal has been set at $65,000 by 2015. To this end, we are seeking funding from Federal, Provincial and Community organizations to assist with covering the costs to fly this group of enthusiastic and dedicated young dancers.

Accommodation

The dancers and their chaperone's, both in Canada and Belgium, will be billeted among fam- ilies in the dance companies

Projected Costs

The cost per dancer is projected to be $2400, with 24 dancers and 3 additional chaperones for a total of 27 participants in total our budget is $64,800. This includes airfare, local transporta- tion, associated travel expense, and costumes. We feel this would be a tremendous opportunity for DSdanse dancers to further their personal growth through dance sense and expand their learning and understanding by performing in another cultural environment.

Traveling to Belgium to participate in the commemoration WWI events will offer an inspiring journey. Not only will the dancers have a profound experience through seeing how connected the world is through the language of dance; their vision of being a Canadian, and experiencing the perspective from a European point of view, will have a lasting impression that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
