Sickle Cell Anemia Risks Teens Education

Meet Diamond Blands of Sunrise, FL. Diamond is 16 years old, and she is currently on 11th grade. Diamond was diagnosed at birth with the hereditary disease, Sickle Cell Anemia. Unfortunately, Diamond's family has a history, and she has had to learn to live with her condition.

Despite the many impediments she's faced, Diamond does well in school - she has a warm personality, many friends, but also appreciates the time she spends at home, while quietly recovering from one of her 4-5 monthly treatments at the Chris Evert Children's Hospital in the North Broward Hospital District, or even just preventing her symptoms from getting worse.

Diamond's treatments at the hospital entail the intake of new blood units, as her condition makes her healthy-red-blood-cells deficient. As those are the cells responsible for carrying oxygen to the entire body, Diamond shows symptoms such as: fatigue, paleness, rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, yellowing of the eyes and skin, attacks of abdominal pain, poor eyesight, problems with thinking or confusion, to name a few.

With those symptoms added to her constant trips to the hospital for treatments, or even emergency episodes when she gets critically ill, Diamond is often running behind on her homework, which she greatly regrets.

We would like to raise $700 to make it possible for her to get her own laptop and necessary programs, and bring it to the hospital, as experts advised that would be a good way to minimize her anxiety and help her get ahead. Her family has struggled to keep up with providing the attention and support she needs, so being able to afford a laptop on their own at this time would only be a dream... But we can come together to help this bright Diamond not lose her zest for life and overcome her situation by shining even brighter!
