Vehicular Justice for the Moores

We have been customers of Monro Muffler and Brake on Arsenal Street in Watertown, MA for nearly seven years. We've taken all the vehicles we've owned since living in Boston to this same shop. We believed in their motto: "Trust and Confidence for Over 50 Years" But they have broken our trust and betrayed our confidence!

On January 15th, 2014, Osheta took our 2008 Kia Sedona, with only 81k miles on it, in for a routine oil change. The next day, while driving our daughter, Trinity, to an American Girl tea party in Natick, MA, Osheta heard a knocking noise coming from the engine, and experienced problems accelerating. She took it immediately into a nearby Sears auto shop, where they informed her that the engine had NO OIL!!! It had all leaked out from the oil filter, and spilled down the motor.

We contacted Monro and explained the situation. They paid to have our van towed back to their shop, where they said it would be diagnosed. Instead, they only took pictures and had it towed to a nearby Kia dealership, without our authorization. We were very confused by this. "Does this mean they are taking responsibility?" we wondered.

ONE WEEK LATER, we contacted them for an update. They told us they were waiting on a diagnosis from the Kia dealership. "That's odd," we thought, "what could be taking them so long to diagnose the problem?" So, we called the dealership. They informed us that they had already delivered the diagnosis to Monro several days prior. And when they asked Monro if they would be authorizing the repair, Monro declined. 


Then we were really confused. Up to this point, Monro seems to want to do the right thing, take responsibility, and make us whole again. But now we're getting conflicting reports about the facts. So, we call Monro back, and explain that the technician reports that the diagnosis has already been delivered.


This is when the truth begins to seep out. "Melinda" at Monro's insurance agency, Traveler's, tells us that Monro has no intention of paying to repair our engine. Instead, she informs us that the "burden of proof is on us." She lets us know that they are not taking responsibility for the damage done to our engine"”a repair that may cost upwards of $5,000!!! 


In order for the Kia dealership to tear down the engine and assess the damage, they are asking for at least $800 to $1,000!!! 


We are church planters and urban missionaries. We do not have $5,000, or even $1,000 just laying around!

Because of Monro's neglegence, our family, Osheta, me, and our 3 children: Tyson, T.J., and Trinity, are without a vehicle. We now have to rely on rides from friends and potentially expensive rental car fees.

We're asking for your help to raise the $1,000 for the diagnostic so that we can prove Monro is at fault.

We want to settle this matter with Monro as quickly and easily as possible. We hope Monro wants to do the right thing. Their motto is "Trust & Confidence", so we trust and are confident that they will stand by their word and take responsibility.
