Terri is battling a rare blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. She was diagnosed in April 2013. This cancer manifests itself in many ways including compromising the strength of her bones. As a result, Terri has suffered from a broken jaw, shoulder and back. Tumors developed in her broken jaw and shoulder. She started chemotherapy last spring in addition to lengthy radiation treatments to shrink the tumors in her face and shoulder. Terri also had surgery on her mouth to address issues the tumor created. We were encouraged by the effectiveness of the above listed treatments as her cancer cells remained within 'normal' range for three months.
Throughout all of these challenges, Terri was motivated to get better so she could return to her position as a 911 dispatcher in Ayer, Ma. She attempted to return to work last month but suffered yet another setback. Her cancer cell counts are elevated yet again. She has now started intensive chemo which seeks to decrease the cancer cells in her body. This new treatment plan is in place to prepare her for a stem cell transplant. The doctors remain hopeful and believe her cancer is treatable. She is only 58 years old and is a great candidate for these treatments.
Cancer effects far too many families. As many people know along with battling cancer comes other hardships. Terri is struggling financially. She is unable to work and lives alone. Sadly, Terri lost her husband in 2001 to Leukemia, another cancer of the blood.
