We are 10 dedicated ballet students from The Dance Center in Walla Walla, WA. We are preparing to embark on a two week dance adventure to Spain and Italy in summer 2014 to participate in the Dance Grand Prix Europe.
The Dance Grand Prix is an international competition that will take place in Barcelona, Spain. There will be over 1200 dancers from five continents competing. Our five days in Barcelona will be dedicated to rehearsing, performing, and competing. The rest of our time in Europe will be spent touring Italy, the home of ballet. Catherine de Medici, of the powerful Renaissance de Medici family, is considered the founding mother of ballet (the word ballet comes from the Italian word ballare, to dance). We will visit Milan, Ferrara, Venice, Florence, and Rome; we will explore the first opera theatre Teatro alla Scala, the Duomo di Milano, Sforza castle, Castello Estense, St. Mark's and St. Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, Uffizi Gallery, and various museums; we will also perform at outdoor music and dance festivals in Florence and Rome. We will experience and learn the history of ballet, from when it flourished in the Renaissance courts of Italy to its contemporary forms.
Our ages range from 10 to 22 years old, and we have been dancing since age 4. We have participated in Summer Dance Lab at Whitman College, performed with the Eugene Ballet and Walla Walla Symphony, as well as participated in numerous other community events. During The Dance Center's 2011 Dance Grand Prix tour, previous dancers placed 1st in Theater Dance, 2nd in Ballet, and 2nd in Modern, and in the 2008 tour they placed 1st in Ballet, 2nd in Modern and 3rd in Costumes. We look forward to sharing our passion for dance and American spirit with fellow dancers from all over the world, and are very excited to participate in the Dance Grand Prix Europe 2014.
Our ballet instructor, Idalee Hutson-Fish, a retired teacher at Whitman College who also taught at the Umbra Institute in Perugia (Italy) for 9 years, is the owner and instructor of The Dance Center. During her dance career, she attended The Juilliard School, The University of Utah, was an apprentice to the First Chamber Dance Company, and danced as a soloist with the Arizona Metropolitan Ballet.
We have been working very hard rehearsing and fundraising, but we need your generous support to help us fulfill our dream of dancing abroad. We hope you will consider supporting our experience of a lifetime. Thank you!
