Run For PKU

Tax deductible
As many of you know and some may not, I'm Kelsey and I have PKU. PKU is a genetic disorder all newborns are tested for through newborn screening with a 1 out of 15,000 chance of testing positive. I was that 1 and as my mother says, I should play the lottery with those odds, but having PKU has taught me to not take my good health for granted. PKU means that my liver does not break down protein, which results in a restricted diet and years of hospital visits. Without the proper diet and medications I would not be the 21 year old, running, Providence College Senior I am today. Without such treatment the protein would ultimately damage my brain cells. PKU research and medications have allowed me to excel in the classroom and athletic field throughout my life and now I feel a sense of responsibility to contribute back, with hopes of reaching new improvements and helping other allied disorders that are not as lucky. I was an avid athlete throughout high school, participating in field hockey, indoor and outdoor track. College has unleashed my love for running through various 5k road races including Fast Feet for Phreedom, also raising money for the New England Connection for PKU and Allied Disorders (NECPAD). This year I have taken on new challenges and completed my first half marathon in September, which has inspired me to continue to overcome obstacles, as PKU has taught me to do, and run a full marathon this spring. Countless hospital visits have shown me how fortunate I am to have treatment available so I will conquer a new goal and run 26.2 miles at the Cox Marathon in Providence, RI on May 4th for those who are not as lucky, where life changing treatment has not yet been discovered. During this holiday season full of giving, I can't help but feel thankful for the sense of discipline and future the available treatment has given me. Any and all contributions to NECPAD will make a difference. Thank you!
