Fifty Shades of Gender (Start Up)

Fifty Shades of Gender is a documentary project aimed towards looking at the fine points of the gender binary and questioning if these gender definitions are too rigid for us to all be living in. We aim to identify other gender identities, the struggles that we go through trying to fit into these binaries or beyond them, and what we can do to break down the boxes of simply male and female because not all of us come in boxes of pink or blue.

When I was struggling with my own gender identity I was watching a lot of documentaries about the trans community. During this time I realized that the only people being represented were transsexuals and even then the representation was very surfaced and did not have a lot to do with actually showing anyone the full expressions of gender within even that spectrum of the community. I didn't know that people that were gender neutral or A gender existed until I got to college and I realized that these people were not showcased even a little bit within the media.

50SOG will showcase transmen, transwomen, and people that are within the gender queer/gender neutral spectrum so that their stories can be told and the world can realize that these people exist.

50SOG will also address issues of patriarchy in society. Such as why during my casting process I found people that were FAAB (Female Assigned At Birth) that were willing to express various or masculine gender identities and expressions whereas it was more difficult for me to find MAAB (Male Assigned At Birth) individuals that identified as trans*. It will address the issues of gender roles and how patriarchy affects not only female identified individuals and male identified individuals but even the cis gender (People that identify with the gender they were assigned at birth) community.

The most important part about Fifty Shades of Gender is that is trans* individuals telling their own stories with a trans* person directing/producing the project, therefore issues that may not be addressed because the cis-gender community doesn't realize that some issues exist because they don't have to face them can be brought to light.

In order for Fifty Shades of Gender to move forward there are a few things that need to be financed since this is a 100% independently run project.

First Song Productions has graciously offered to be the official producers of this project but since they are a small company and this will be a larger project than their usual clients they need to be financed in order to keep them afloat.

That's pretty much what we are trying to fund right now with this page here, and everyone that contributes will be named in the credits as a financial contributor (even if you only contribute $1)

Help make Fifty Shades of Gender happen! Help people tell their stories so that we can open up discussions within wider communities about the affects of gender binaries in our society.
