My name is Stephanie Moeller, and I have a genetic condition called "dentinogenesis imperfecta" where my teeth constantly crumble, break, decay, and ache, due to the lack of enamel. I've experienced toothaches and countless visits to the dentist for crowns and root-canals when I was only around 8-10 years old. Besides the fact that my teeth hurt so much, I also suffered the embarrassment of having a lot of people point out how my teeth are so sharp and brown. Luckily, a nice dentist fixed a few of my front teeth and made them look pretty right before the beginning of sixth grade.
Now that I'm 17 and turning 18 next month, this problem is an even bigger concern to me. Since January of this year, I have had around 4-5 root canals. So much more need to be done now, I need multiple root canals and crowns. For the past six months, I have been experiencing the worst toothaches anyone could imagine. They aren't constant, but I get them every single day, even during school. I try my hardest to stay away from the pain relievers (Ibuprofen and my prescription Norco) but sometimes the pain gets to be unbearable and I have to take something to stop it. Or in extreme cases, not even the pain medicine works. One time last summer, the pain was so intense that I had to visit the ER. I got home around three a.m., with only drugs to help me.
This past night the whole left side of my face was aching as I slept. During the past couple months, the pain has moved from my teeth to my ear, sinuses, and different places around my jaw. I know it's infected, and I need to get something done about it right away. But what has been stopping me for so long? No money. My family has spent all they could to help this situation, and we don't have anything left to spend.
So you are probably wondering why the price of solving this problem is as high as it is. Well, it isn't only for me. Four out of nine of my other family members are experiencing this genetic condition as well, and we will all eventually need every single tooth repaired with a crown. They don't all have the chronic pain like I do, but their teeth are certainly falling apart like mine are. Our insurance will not cover all of this, and I currently cannot get any of my teeth fixed until the end of this year. If you would be so kind as to help us, please do!
