Building on a Prayer

Donation protected
We are a family of four, soon to be a family of six(!) living in a very tiny, two bedroom house in very poor condition. We were able to make do where we were for a time, but recently found out that we have identical twin boys on the way. With the impending arrival of TWO more children, coupled with the sorry state of the house, we have realized that we need another place to live.

My parents share ownership of a Christmas tree farm with my aunt and they have agreed to allow us to build a home on a portion of that property. We would love to do this, but while our families are very supportive and helpful, they are in no position to assist us financially. We have sat down and crunched numbers over and over again. My husband is the sole provider for our family and this makes our financial situation very tight and we have hardly any extra cash to work with; this means we're completely unable to take advantage of such a great opportunity.

We have looked into so many lower-priced housing options from yurts to gypsy trailers to large campers and then some... but each possibility requires such an amount of money that it seems pointless to sink a large chunk into what would most certainly be a temporary solution when that money could be spent on an actual house.

Another problem is that while we don't have to purchase land, we will still be working from the ground up. We would need all the necessary permits and surveying required to begin work on the site, as well as installing the foundation, well, and septic system"”all this before we even start on the house itself! This is such a large up-front cost and we cannot even afford to begin this preliminary construction.

We don't need or even want anything huge or elaborate. We have already found a small, modest design that would suit us quite well. It would be such a relief to have a home to be proud of, where we can invite people over and let our children play safely without any concern of cracked stairs, peeling paint, sagging floors, drafty windows, or rodents chewing through the walls.

I know that our goal amount is quite high, but the full amount would pay for everything we need to build the home we want. We have decided that even if we do not get the full amount, we will still work toward getting to the farm by at least hopefully preparing the site and maybe finding a mobile home to place on the property or something...

Every little bit helps; if you can only spare $20, $10, or even just $5, we would be so grateful.
