Poorhouse: A poorhouse or workhouse was a government-run facility in the past for the support and housing of dependent or needy persons, typically run by a local government entity such as a county or municipality. Often the poorhouse was situated on the grounds of a poor farm on which able-bodied residents were required to work.
The Jackson County Poor Farm's land was purchased in 1880 and was built shortly after. The original building burned down and was rebuilt in 1934, and was open until the state decided to close it in 1971.
Nearly 5 years ago we started the project of restoring the Jackson County Poor Farm located in Holton, KS. After having our first child, we realized we wouldn't have the time we did in the beginning to work on our project, so tried selling. After a year on the market, and another child on the way, we decided we needed to focus on other areas the house more. We purchased a wood boiler after living here a year, but it runs non-stop because of the original windows and no insulation in the 3 story brick home. With the number of windows in the home it is beyond our budget. We plan to replace at least the lower two levels of windows where we spend all of our time, but wish to replace them all to help save the building. To save on costs we plan on installing the replacement windows ourselves. This will also benefit anyone else wanting to take over the project at a later date as this is one of the three large updates the home needs.
