Just to clarify. I have not lost contact with Glen. I speak with his family, and he is doing well. It is just difficult to remain in consistent contact with Glen himself because he doesn't carry a cell phone or have any other way to communicate.
Just want to wish all the donors, their families, and especially Glen James and his family a Happy Thanksgiving. We all have so much to be thankful for; keep Glen and his family in your thoughts and remember that none of this could have been done without everyone coming together as one. Thank you so much!
If anyone in the Boston area has had contact with Glen over the past few weeks, please email me ASAP.
I cannot thank you enough for the amount of support this campaign has received over the past few weeks from all over the world! It is truly remarkable what can happen when we put our heads together towards one common goal. Although it's slowing down, the donations continue to come in on an hourly basis. Together, we can say that we changed a man's life.
It was a busy, but an extremely successful week last week. What an honor to meet Glen, and all the beautiful people in the great city of Boston. Its humbling to finally meet someone like Glen. He is one of the most positive, happiest people I have ever come in contact with; and to think of the situation he was in and to continue to keep his head high is a special trait that not many have. I think as a human race, were constantly losing sight on the things that really matter in this world, and when you hear stories like this it almost reboots your mentality about life and what it actually means to be happy.
Glen could not thank us enough for the donations that have come pouring in from across the world, but I continued to tell him, he's the one that needs to be thanked.
He wrote a statement to share with you and I promised I would post it for everyone to read:
"Stuttering is not pretty...Strangely enough, most stutterers can talk fluently when they don't really need to talk. Now I need to talk, and so I cant.
No need to nudge me to talk, that's my job. Thinking is far greater than talking anyway. Stutterers are great thinkers, because the are forced to listen to everyone.
I am considering keeping my bad teeth, all twelve of them, as a trademark, and also my eye glasses, which are held together by an apparent paperclip. And who could impersonate me? Who would even want to impersonate me?
The worst thing about stuttering is also the best thing about it: people assume you're not to bright, so they let they're guard down. And THEN you outshine them.
Anyone who wouldn't have turned in all that money would have HAD to be sick in one way or another. I may look sick, but I am a genius!
I am getting permanent housing. Other homeless people have been asking me, how soon will they be getting housing? Do they have to wait to find a backpack with $40,000 in it?
I am getting job offers from everywhere, homeless people want me to send them there because I only need one. I can type, but I cant use the phone- Im a stutterer!
On a serious note; I don't think there is a real cure for the multiple of homeless people, because their problems go far beyond a simple lack of housing, but the problems of the homeless could be managed far better.
There really isn't much difference between homeless and non-homeless people as we would like to think, but you would only find that out if you couldn't make next months rent and truly have no where to go, but the streets...
More than anything I would like to thank every pedestrian stranger who gave me spare change. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Maybe I'm wrong, but this story is much bigger than a man who found money and turned it in; its a true testament that there are amazing people in this world, and no matter what our background, what color our skin is, who we know, how much money we make, what political party were for; if we come TOGETHER and sincerely help each other, and can lean on each other in times of needs, we can create positive change like we have in Glen's life. He also reminds us, that there are several other problems that can be fixed if we can come together as one.
I am happy to say that with the plans in motion, we have done our best to successfully create a life for Glen to succeed, instead of just hand him a bag of cash. It couldn't have been a better scenario. He has a great head on his shoulders and just fell upon bad luck. Despite the unfortunate stereotype for homeless people, Glen has never had any substance abuse issues, so I am positive the money will be going to the right things. We have set him up with a trust, in which a trustee, requested to remain anonymous, agreed to help manage. He is working with a support group, which specifically deals with getting homeless people off the streets. They are providing him an apartment and guidance on finances, job training, and dealing with everyday life. They will also provide help for other things such as medical assistance, visiting the doctor, well being, etc. The New England Dental Group has also agreed to provide lifetime care to Glen, if he chooses. I have also taken many comments off the site to share with Glen, and show him how he has changed thousands of lives.
The account will soon be directly connected to Glen's bank, so any donations from there on out will go straight there. So a couple weeks, a couple months, or maybe a year from now, when you find yourself thinking of Glen, and doing the right thing, or deciding to help someone; you can check the website to remind yourself there are great people out there, or you can donate to Glen hoping he continues the blessed life he deserves.
Thank you so much again for your support and encouragement through emails and phone calls, and especially your faith in me to do the right thing. I would really like to thank all of my family and friends for keeping me positive through the whole process despite the nay-sayers. And also, their willingness to help me out in the process at the drop of a hat. Everyone deserves a pat on the back. And most an foremost, don't let the love in this world die down with this story. Lets continue a trend, and maybe, just maybe we can change the world.... YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME.
P.S I am working on getting more pictures and video of our visit posted.
I hope everyone had a safe and fantastic weekend..
Just wanted to bring everyone up to speed. Over the weekend, Glen put me in touch with family in the area. I am speaking with both Glen and family to take proper steps for secure money exchange, as well as legal, social, and medical help. Obviously, there are a lot of moving parts when exchanging this amount of money. We want to make sure it is done right and in a way it positively influences Glen. Please understand, for Glen's protection we cannot disclose every detail.
We are speaking with a Christian outreach program who will be willing to help Glen get off his feet; see a doctor (qualify for disability/ improve quality of life, etc) help find a place to stay (get set up with subsidized housing), provide support and guidance at anytime, help Glen get the things he needs, etc.
If anyone is willing to donate in other ways, such as clothes, furniture, appliances, etc. please email me, and I will make sure it goes to the proper place.
I will be making my way to Boston at some point next week where I will present the money to Glen. Once this is done, the website will continue to run for Glen from here on out. I have talked with gofundme and they will be able to link this directly to Glen's account, so everything donated will funnel in directly to Glen.
I will keep everyone updated over the next two weeks about our progress.
I cannot thank you enough for the amount of support we have received to really change this mans life. I think if we all pull together more often and push aside all the hate, there is so much more in this world we can accomplish.
$100k.... WOW! Thats all I can say...You guys have been absolutely amazing!
Its crazy to see what people can do when they come together to achieve one goal. Imagine the possibilities! Lets spread the kindness that Glen has sparked in all of us and change the world together :-)
Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.
Good afternoon, everyone!! I hope everyone had an awesome day..
I cannot tell you how awesome it is to see this amount of people come together to make real change.
I finally got to speak to Glen today. He heard of the support he had been receiving from you guys and went to NBC to see what the fuss was about. He is such an awesome, upbeat man for someone who's had his luck over the past few years. He said THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO IS HELPING!! I explained to him that he has no reason to thank us, and that. He is the true hero. He told me with the amount of money he has received on the streets over the past few days, he was able to open a bank account. We discussed how he would like to receive the money and what he would like to use it for. We want to be very careful how this amount of money is handed over. He was up for the idea of having some guidance on what to do with this amount of money. He said he would like a week to think about it, and in the meantime, I will speak with a few financial folks to see how we can help him in a way that will positively influence the rest of his life. He loved the idea of a place to stay, some clothes, food, etc. we will continue to stay in touch as much as possible. He does not have a cellphone and when he is away from the shelter there is no other way to contact him.
Donations just keep pouring in. I have had people willing to donate computers, clothes, food, etc. I am also speaking with a few folks about the possibility of a house or apartment. A major organization also came forward with the opportunity of employment and an undisclosed donation. I will be working with their fundraising department for guidance the rest of the way.
Many of you are wondering what happens when we reach our goal? The sky is the limit, the more money we make, the more people we can help. Some ideas have been thrown around to donate the money towards the Boston homeless shelter in Glen's name. I am also open for suggestions, it is your donation dollars and there are many people to help!! Lets keep up the hard work...
Again, I cannot thank you enough for the support. If we change one persons life at a time, we can change the world.
UNBELIEVABLE, the amount of support Glen is receiving right now. I am currently in the process of finding out more about Glen. Whats his situation currently? What does he need? How can we best help him? Once this is determined, I will lay out a financial plan. (Apartment deposit/ down payment, rent, utilities, clothes, food, job consultation, etc.)
I am also in contact with a few people about the possibility of housing help.
Good evening everyone! I cannot thank you enough for the amount of support we have received thus far. Just amazing what people can do when they come together to work towards one goal.
Several questions are coming up about how the money will be donated. Let me assure you, that the purpose of this donation is to positively affect the life of someone in need. It will be handled with the utmost care. We will not just hand over 50k and say, "see ya later" These plans will not happen over night, but I will keep you updated as they come to light.
Again, thank you all so much for your support and continue to spread the word!
Awesome work everyone! Lets keep it up..spread the word..every little bit helps! Tweet, retweet, Facebook, anything you can. If we help one we can help more!
Lots of questions coming in about assurance. Working on a plan now. I can assure you the money will go to the right place. Again keep it up and lets make the world a better place one person at a time!!
A homeless man by the name of Glen James found $40,000 yesterday and promptly returned the backpack with all of its contents. Lets all chip in and help this man change his life. Every little donation helps. Lets be reassured that there is still hope and humanity in our great nation. See article below:
BOSTON (CBS) "” A homeless man turned in a backpack with $2,400 in cash, $39,500 in travelers checks and a passport that he found at South Bay Mall in Dorchester. Boston Police officers at South Bay Mall were flagged down by the man in front of the TJ Maxx Store. The man said he found a black backpack that contained a large sum of money and a passport in the front of the store. Officers took the backpack and its contents. The Good Samaritan could only provide officers with his name and the address of the shelter where he currently lives, Boston Police said. Officers notified store security at the South Bay Mall about the backpack. Later Saturday night, police were contacted by an employee of Best Buy who said a customer lost his backpack. The passport matched the customer's identity and his backpack was returned to him.
