Fund that bestows one (and sometimes two) Flushing High School (Michigan) Graduate a $1000 scholarship
annually.
John was a 1991 Flushing High School graduate. He joined the US Navy that August and immediately started his training to become a Navy SEAL. When John was shot in battle on Sept 11, 2008, he was on his twelfth deployment since 9/11. He had earned the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and was a part of the exclusive Navy Seal "Naval Special Development Warfare Group" otherwise known as DevGru in military circles and "SEAL Team 6" in the media. He died early the next morning, Afghan time. John was highly decorated having earned numerous accommodations such as two Silver Stars, four Bronze Stars with Valor, and a purple heart. He is survived by his daughter Madison Marcum of Massachusetts; his mother, Luellen Marcum of Flushing, MI; and his sister, Kaylee Pierle of Fenton.
