Clean Water for Kuna Yala
Donation protected
The
Kunas collect rainwater in plastic barrels. The barrels are positioned very
close to the huts where rodent feces can and do contaminate their drinking
supply. When the rainy season is over they obtain their drinking water from a water
hole on the main land. Due to lack of maintenance,
that water is brown and no filtration is used to purify the water.
The Kunas suffer from a multitude of diarrhoeal diseases caused by consuming dirty water. As for the children, Kuna infants are given breast milk until 2 years of age. Afterwards, they are given unpurified rainwater. Since their bodies are still fragile, many toddlers die because they are incapable of fighting off the bacteria.
We're raising $10,000 to ship a water purifying solution donated by Adya. We're also purchasing new barrels and filters to distribute.
