Arastradero Preserve Poppy Project
Palo Alto's Arastradero Preserve has 70 acres above the parking lot, that has been a solid weed patch for about 100-150 years, with prickly thistles and European weed grasses covering the whole area.
The Poppy Project is to replace the weeds with the original wildflowers and native bunchgrasses, that were originally green year-round, wildflowers blooming 10 months of the year.
Palo Alto Weekly newspaper article describes the project. A small test plot was planted and bloomed in spring 2013 and 2014, and will continue to bloom each year in April.
Funding would be used to expand the planting further uphill, using native grass straw as a mulch to kill the weeds, plus growing more wildflower and bunchgrass seedlings.
My goal is to have this site be one of the best wildflower viewing spots in Northern California when completed.
