My name is Yosimar Reyes. I am a 24 year old poet from Eastside San Jose that has recently been granted the opportunity to attend San Francisco State University where I plan on majoring in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. This is HUGE not only for me but for my family since I will be the first one ever to attend a 4 year University. I am ecstatic at the idea of finally finishing my studies but sadly we live in a country where higher education is a challenge within itself but as an undocumented student it becomes nearly impossible to manage paying tuition with no financial aid plus helping your family that is struggling to make ends meet. I have always been the type of person that when faced with obstacles I dream of possibilities and that is what this campaign is a POSSIBILITY.


I have performed and taught in University classrooms across the country and each time before stepping into these institutions a little part of me would tell me that I didn't have the credentials to be speaking in these spaces but my spirit would remind me that my voice represents all those folks that struggle on the daily to find community in the lonesome place that can be higher education.


I have spent countless nights contemplating whether or not I should reach out to my community for help. As a undocumented person in this country one becomes accustom to doing things autonomously, to learning and figuring things out on one's own but I know that I have huge base of folks that love me. I have been blessed that so many people see themselves reflected in my poems and have a deep appreciation for my hot mess self.

The $3,000 raised in this campaign will go directly to paying for my first semester's tuition. I trust and believe that we can reach this goal with no trouble. If you find it in your heart to donate a $1, $5, $10 ANYTHING I would be eternally grateful and if you can't donate a simple repost to your networks would be just as valuable.
