Picture this with me: You live in an apartment or condominium with carport or street parking only. Working on personal vehicles in the parking lot is prohibited. You need to get an oil change, or replace a worn belt, a drive shaft, or something relatively simple on your sole means of transportation. Even if you can source cheap parts for the job, you have no where to work on it and can't afford to pay someone else to do the work for you. What do you do?
That's where my idea starts. I'm very passionate about opening up a "Do-It-Yourself" garage in the San Diego area.
I served in the United States Army where I was able to work on my own cars at the on-base Auto Hobby Shop which had work bays with lifts, tools, parts, and a knowledgeable mechanic on site to assist me if I got in a bind. I would not have been able to afford my own car had this not been an option for me.
There just isn't this sort of facility available in the civilian sector even though there is a huge need for such a business, especially in today's economy. People just can't afford to pay the high prices that come with taking their cars to an automotive repair shop and paying a mechanic an hour's worth of labor for a job that would have only taken 10 minutes if only they had the available tools and a place to do the work themselves.
I would like to purchase an existing garage, including all equipment and tools. I would convert the offices into a retail automotive parts shop for one-stop servicing. We would sell parts in the retail store that could be installed in the work bays. We would charge work bays on a rental basis, by the hour or 15-minute intervals, allowing customers to use the work bays to do their own work to their own vehicles. I would employ a full-time master mechanic who would be available to give pointers, assist with techniques and proper use of tools and equipment, and to finish jobs if needed. I would provide computers at each workstation to accommodate researching one's project while performing the work, step by step.
This has been a dream of mine since leaving the military and at this point in my life, I really don't see any way to accomplish this goal without the help of some investors or sponsors. That brought me here to gofundme. I would truly appreciate any and all assistance you could give in reaching this goal and transforming this dream into a reality. Thank you!
