Hello to all of Kate's fantastic supporters!

I have some exciting news for you, direct from Kate: KATE IS OFFICIALLY LUNG CANCER-FREE!!! Yesterday, Kate had a PET scan, which showed that there is NO LUNG CANCER in her body.

As a result of this exciting news, we have decided to close this fundraiser. THANK YOU for your donations. Your support, financial and emotional, has meant the world to Kate. You have literally saved her life.

On a personal note, I would like to thank each and every one of you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping my Auntie Kate stay alive. Seeing that she means as much to all of you as she does to me has been incredibly powerful. You've shown me that we, as a community, have an immense power to change--and even to SAVE--lives. You've renewed my faith in the power of giving and in the power of asking for help. It's been an absolute honor to facilitate this fundraiser.

Thank you.

Hi, all! I have VERY encouraging news directly from Auntie Kate, herself! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS HAPPEN! Much love and thanks, Laura

FROM KATE:

Here’s the bullet: The docs have scanned me, and the scan came back and it says two wonderful things: 1) There are no new cancer cells in my body and 2) The places where there was cancer have shrunk a LOT already. So the chemo and the radiation, and the supplements and change of diet are WORKING. Holy crap and yippee! It’s the best possible post-chemo scan a person can get. AND I’m still not out of the woods. Here’s what it means. It means I’ve got a good hope.

I’ve never been a big one for hope, but I always fall into it. There are dumb hopes, and greedy hopes, and impossible hopes, and tragic hopes. But every now and then, you get a good hope, and with this scan, I just got one.

The purpose of this scan is to determine a baseline picture of cancer in my body, to match up against a more accurate PET scan that I’ll get in 2 to 3 months. Why wait 2-3 months? I’m done with chemotherapy and radiation, but they’re not done with me. The radiation and chemo are going to keep working in my body for at least that long. And THAT means I’m going to be chemo-brained, exhausted, and weak for that time. BUT NOW I HAVE A GOOD HOPE!

I have such a good hope that I’m booking gigs. The earliest I’ve got right now is a week in USA’s heartland in mid-September. And you made it possible. Yep, you did. I got great nutritional supplements thanks to you. I got all my transportation to and from the Block Center in Chicago for chemo thanks to you. I was able to change my diet to one that discourages cancer, thanks to you. In a nutshell, I'm alive right this minute because of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

OK—living with hope is new for me, so here I go. I promise I’ll keep eating well, taking my supplements, and exercising as I can. It took an awfully long time for me to write this, but when I get more of a brain I’ll write some more, I promise that too. So, have good hope. I love you.

6 days. $100,000. 2,604 people.

THANK YOU. Thank each of you so very much.

Thank you for spreading the word, thank you for your kind thoughts and words, and thank you so very much for your donations. We set out to help Kate beat cancer by covering the costs of her treatment plan, and we have.

BECAUSE OF YOU, Kate will be cancer free. I am personally blown away by the power of our community, the power of asking for help, and the power of giving. Each of you has become a part of Kate’s cure and we thank you so much for standing by her side.

Our journey is not over. Again, because of you, Kate’s body will soon be tumor free, but her cancer story doesn’t end there. Kate’s life will never look the way it did before she had cancer. This disease is tricky—just because it’s gone, doesn’t mean it won’t come back. While the doctors believe that Kate has a good chance of avoiding a reoccurrence, .to do so, she must continue following the recommended treatment plan.

To keep Kate healthy, she will need to remain on the doctor-prescribed diet and some of the nutritional supplements for the rest of her life. Also, Kate will have follow-up visits with her doctors all over the country to ensure that the treatment plan has worked and that Kate continues to be healthy.

We have come a long way, but we have further to go to ensure that Kate remains healthy and cancer free. Please continue to share Kate’s story, keep donating, and help us KEEP KATE CANCER FREE!

Thank you so much for your support; you have blown us away with your kindness and it has, very literally, changed Kate’s life for the better in so many ways.

Thank you.

And please, keep sharing the link to this project: http://bit.ly/10j1cPm

Kate Bornstein has cancer.  The good news, direct from the team of skilled doctors on her case, is that the cancer is curable.  However, the treatment plan that gives Kate the best chance of beating cancer is incredibly expensive.  Kate has spent the past thirty years helping the rest of us Stay Alive—now it’s our turn to give back.  Let’s HELP KATE BORNSTEIN BEAT CANCER AND STAY ALIVE!

This August, Kate was diagnosed with lung cancer.  She underwent surgery, after which extensive testing led her doctors to believe that the cancer was gone.  However, in February, Kate’s doctors discovered that this was not, in fact, the case.  The cancer was back.  Since receiving this news, Kate has seen numerous talented physicians and other medical professionals.  The consensus is that Kate’s cancer IS CURABLE.  However, Kate’s treatment plan is more complicated than most because she has suffered from another kind of cancer--CLL, or Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia--for over fifteen years.  Kate will undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment.  She will eat according to strict nutritional diet plan and she will take a large number of supplements that will strengthen her body’s ability to handle the chemo and radiation.

This is the treatment plan is Kate’s best—and only—chance at survival.  However, it is also exceptionally expensive.  While Kate does have health insurance, she must pay the very high deductable, make high monthly insurance payments, and make co-payments for doctor visits and prescriptions.  Also, Kate has to travel to the hospitals that are best suited to administer her unique treatment plan.  Right now, this means going to Chicago five times over the next two months for chemotherapy.  In the coming months, she may also have to travel to San Diego and Texas for additional treatment.  Luckily, Kate will undergo radiation therapy in New York City, where she lives, but because of her weak immune system, she will have to take cabs to and from the hospital five days per week for at least two month s .  Additionally, insurance does not cover the high cost of the supplements that her doctor insists are an integral part of her treatment plan.

During the course of her treatment, Kate’s immune system will be seriously compromised, she will be exhausted, and she will experience periods of extreme nausea.  As a result, her doctors have insisted that Kate take a hiatus from work-related travel, speaking engagements, performances, and even writing.  For the next eight to ten months, Kate will be undergoing treatment and recovering from cancer, so she will not be able to work.  This means that Kate will have no way to pay for rent, utilities, food, pet care, or any other normal expense.  So, not only does Kate have to worry about paying her medical bills, she also has to worry about paying her basic living expenses.

This is where we come in.  Kate’s work—her books, lectures, performances, apps, and online presence—has helped countless people choose life instead of suicide.  Kate’s efforts have literally saved thousands of lives.  Now, it’s time for all of us to save the life of just one person: Kate Bornstein.  Through our donations, each of us has the power to give Kate our thanks, to be there for her in this difficult time, and to help her save her life.

Please join me in donating whatever you can to help Kate beat cancer and STAY ALIVE.

Kate, thank you so much for the good hope update! Someone very close to me is getting ready to start chemo & radiation, so I'm thankful to hear your hopeful story. Also, wondering if you happened to find any awesome queer-oriented cancer organizations or support groups along your journey? We sure could use something like that right about now.

An author and an actress? I know it sounds harsh and I really do feel for them but I thought this site was for people with nowhere else to turn. Not for people that already have the financial means but choose to solicite.

I wanted to share this list that includes a lot of info about free/cheap air transportation for folks who need cancer treatment: I have a friend who took advantage of one of these programs and they were very helpful. http://www2.nycbar.org/Publica tions/pdf/engl_for_website.pdf

How often do we get to give back to someone who changes the world, who gives each os us a little more space to be ourselves. See, Katie- look how much we all love you!

I hope this might be helpful: American Cancer Society has a program that provides free transportation to and from treatment. In 2010 and 2011 they gave me rides by pre-paying my fare with a local cab company. I don't know if that's still how they do it, the web site is a little vague: http://www.cancer.org/myacs/fl orida/programsandservices/life line-provides-transportation-t o-cancer-patients

Kate has done so much for so many of us. Her value as a leader, trailblazer, hellraiser, wordsmith, thinker and community elder (sorry Kate) can not be underestimated or understated. As for myself, I literally would not be the woman I am today if it weren't for Kate's influence. When I was still casting around in the dark, her words were the first light to peek through the curtain. She was for me inspiration and example. Not simply as a trans woman, but as an artist!! She opened up a whole world of gender and artistic possibilities I had no idea where even options! I may have had fire burning in me from the beginning, but Kate fanned the flames into a raging inferno. I am able to fight for others, because she fought for me! Kate is my inspiration, my light, my Sister and one of the finest people I have ever met. So now she needs our help. And by Gods she must have it!

Hi Kate, I just saw this and had to do what I could do. I don't have much, but I do have I can't find a better place for. [Somehow, it came up as anonymous when I did my thing...but know I am here.] I am so grateful that this site is here and so moved by the gifts of so many that will help you in tangible ways. I have loved you long, as you know. And, our friendship made a big difference in my life. The work you do and have done is an inspiration to so many...this is the least we all can do. Big thanks to Laura and Barbara for this wonderful idea! Prayers are with you...mine especially. Peace to you, dear Kate.
